john_kasaian1
Hello! Today I went out to see how my assistant, the Mule, was weathering the Winter and the poor thing needs worming. On my way back to town I stopped at Barnes and Noble and scoped out the new Lenswork which had an interview with the late Karsh. I read it and low and behold there was quite an homage to John Garo of Boston, who was Karsh's mentor. An interesting guy. john nanian kindly supplied some information on Garo, but not a whole lot is known about him considering his popularity in the art community at the time, and not much of his work appears to have survived and his negatives were reputedly destroyed under rather mysterious circumstances. I was wondering if anyone else here has some insight regarding this pioneer American photographer or the whereabouts of any examples of his work outside the George Eastman House. Thanks! todd frederick
I received a Barnes and Noble gift certificate for the holidays, so I will get a copy of Lenwork (the best journal in all creation) in the next few days and read the article. But, most important, how did you campanion, Mule, survive his worming?
john_kasaian1
Todd, The mule is doing fine. I gave her a couple of apples to get the taste out of her mouth.
john_kasaian1
BTW, One of the things brought up in the Yousef Karsh interview was that John Garo and Arthur Fielder of the Boston Pops were drinking buddies during Prohibition. It kind of inspired me to do a follow up worming with a fifth of Old Tennisshoes---the Mule likes it and it would be a good preventative measure against worms for me as well!
