waltflanagan
Here is an official Olympus web site.
http://www.olympus.com.hk/olympus/tc/events/current_event/detail.html?int_id=1053&type=events_new

If you run it translate it through google it basically says they are having an event June 16th to launch their new Micro 4/3 camera.

I'm just happy that a company is doing something interesting instead of just iterating the same old thing.
jtk
Nice. It does have an eye-level-finder option: Hot shoe. It'd be silly to have interchangable lenses, smarter to offer clamp-on wide and tele...especially considering dust. Looks like a $600USD camera, intended to rival Canon G10...the earlier $1200 assertion seemed ridiculous.
godfrey
It's an interchangeable lens, Micro Four Thirds camera, John.
GerrySiegel
John, isn't the hot shoe for flashguns? How did that add- on idea work out on the fixed lens Sigma, or was it Ricoh, for instance? A good quality bright dedicated optical viewfinder can be costly accessory I am thinking.
ilkka
The add on viewfinder works extremely well on Ricoh GRD and Sigma DP1, because they have one fixed focal length. It does not work quite as well on an interchangeable lens camera, especially if a zoom lens is used, but is still an important option to have. Yes, they are costly, sometimes overly so when compared against the price of the whole camera or lens. Separate finders have been used in Leicas for a long time so this is not a new invention.
warren_lafever
here is my two cents- you are arguing about a product that officially does not exist yet. (the oly m4/3 camera and accessories). you could wait a few days to see what oly decides to release. there could be a ton of stuff (some of it might come with the lenses). there always seems to be a surprise everynow and then...
GerrySiegel
Thanks Warren. This is the kind of thing fueled by manufacturers as they pound the drum with teasers and concept models. We are beard stroking of course, or navel gazing. What does one call idle speculation? A game for cool nights when a young man's fanciy turns lightly to thoughts of ........ new gear.
john_robison3
It sure took long enough for Olympus to intro a micro 4:3. I can see building a little pre release hype but if the actual product turns out to be not so earth shaking then there is sure to be backlash among those who have looked foward to it. Still over a week to go.
miserere_mei
I had a strong, visceral reaction to this camera. These are my thoughts on Olympus's attempt at a micro-4/3 with the E-P1. Yes, I do feel hurt and offended by Olympus.
GerrySiegel
Miserere, what do you really think, sarcasm aside?
( Olympus produced a film camera called the Stylus Epic. Silver and black and tiny. I had to return them both. The camera was so slippery it gave me no grip. The focus was unreliable. Everybody else loved them. What does that say.Olympus sold a million of them and they were everyone's second camera for a while.)

I believe a serious camera should or must have a serious eye level viewfinder. Does the rest of the world agree? How about a folding wire frame finder? (Nah, that is for fixed lenses. But that leaked photo shows a fixed FL lens.) I bet Jinfinance will sell wire frame finders for 10 euros:-) I give China a lot credit, marching ahead.
GerrySiegel
Most of my cameras are pocketable, dudes and dudesses. Even the hefty E-1. A Domke photo vest goes smartly over board shorts or a swim suit.

akira
That particular image flying around is a total nonsense. Look at the position of the phi-like mark that indicates where the image plane is. The distance between the mount and the mark is too long, compared to the distance between them on G1.

It's nothing but a bad-taste montage of Pen-F and some pancake (sorry, Godfrey, you hate this term :)) lens.

14mm 2.8l
Have Mercy on Mei, Gerry

The Domke looks nice. I cornered the market a couple years ago on a half dozen Tamron logo'd version of your Domke. Best $20 a pop delivered I spent & the zippered pockets are incredibly handy & deep. I'm told they were to be given to tammy customers who bought tamron's top end lens but instead they got hoarded by the shop owner & toss'd out on ebay. I bought'um all.

Anyways,

I found some more info & 100 comments... so far

From Mike Johnston, Click on the China website linky & see specs like inbody Image Stabilization, 13mp, $990 price with kit lens, ect:

http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2009/06/olympus-digital-pen-leaked.html

ilkka
It looks expensive, and at $990 it would be. I hope it is a good camera, and not just a pretty one. If it was $600 I would buy it. At $990 (with a cheap kit lens?, the 2.8/17 that I really want is probably another $300) I will wait and see some test results and then decide.
GerrySiegel
Hey, Funny you should mention the Tamron logoed vest, Lindy. My Domke has or had a Fuji emblem on a back pocket, given to me by my photographer cousin from Boston who got it a show. I am not a jacket wearer much but this one is comfy. Hardware is not all that great in case anyone wants to buy one...they may have improved on that. Otherwise, for free is the best bet. Miserere, I read your little web blurb and you haven't made a 'prima facie' case, sorry.
GerrySiegel
Regarding hats. There is only one hat for photographers. The olive Tilley Airflo model from Canada. It floats. It looks sharp. Hip. Cool. Sixty bucks. Buy two. (One to mislay in the overhead compartment.)

14mm 2.8l
Marketprice is up on Tilley Airflow:

http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___68599

I have a feeling the demand for the cool looking retro oly will satisfy Olympus. At least it gets us past the same ol gear released every year with a couple more megapixels this time around mindset.
