gary_ferguson1
I've added an uncoded 90mm Elmarit to my M8 outfit. I plan to use it with an IR filter, all my other M8 lenses are coded. Is it worth getting the 90mm coded as well?
aplumpton
No, I don't think so. Mine isn't. From what I understand, It is mainly useful for wide angle lenses.
kbg32
No, no need. I use my 90 with an IR filter uncoded and it works fantastic. Coding is really necessary for focal lengths 35/28 or less.
gary_ferguson1
Keith/Arthur, thanks for your answers. How do you set the menu when you're using your 90mm lenses? Lens detection On, On + IR, or Off?
Alex_Es
Mine is uncoded with IR filter. No problems from was I can see.
blakley
It'll work fine without coding, but the EXIF data won't show what lens you used, which is a little bit of a pain.
aplumpton
I don't even bother with the IR cut filter most of the time. Not many subjects that require it and just another plane (or not so plane....) glass surface to affect quality.
kbg32
Gary - Lens detection - On + IR.
dougmiles
Keith, really Lens detection - On + IR? On - without coding there's no lens ID to detect. IR - without lens ID info, no way for the camera to compute corrections for corner fall-off or cyan fringing caused by the IR filter. I would have thought OFF, but without coding maybe it just doesn't matter when using this lens? What am I missing?
ismail_mustapha1
I leave it on all the time. I tend to forget to change the setting when I swap lenses with coding.
andy_piper2
"On - without coding there's no lens ID to detect." Right - the camera just ignores the lens type and does no correctionfor green corners if it cannot detect a lens code - even if it is set to ON + IR. "I would have thought OFF, but without coding maybe it just doesn't matter when using this lens? What am I missing?" For lenses longer than 50mm, (i.e.75, 90, 135) the angle of view is narrow enough that the corners do not pick up a green tint when using IR filters, thus there is nothing to correct. The green corners only occur if a lens has a view wide enough that it starts looking through the filters significantly slantwise. Technically, 50mm lenses supposedly show a hint of green corners, but I've never seen it. 35mm and 28mm lenses show more, and 24mm and wider REALLY need the coding.
