joseph_dickerson
Hi All,
Quick question...is there an optical difference between the 80mm f/4 macro C and the 80mm f/4 macro N. I know the barrel and coating are different but how about the optical design and/or performance.
Thinking of getting one to use on a Mirex T/S adapter on Canon EOS 6D.
Thanks,
JD
Aoresteen
I believe that you are referring to the Mamiya 645 80mm lens, correct? Need to know who made the lens first. :)
joseph_dickerson
Ooops! I do indeed mean the Mamiya 645 80mm f/4 macro lenses.
Silly me...
JD
jim_momary
Idle speculation -

Quickly looking in a pile of manuals lying about, both are 6 element lenses of seemingly rather similar optical construction (apparently). I cannot contrast both as I only have the "C". I know mine performs nicely, and I'd suspect the N coating helps a bit more with flare, etc. See pic below.

Jim

joseph_dickerson
Jim,
Thanks, that's just the info I was looking for and couldn't seem to find anywhere. They certainly do look to be the same.
Guess I'll go looking for a "C" version, if there's a price difference.
JD
ondebanks
Nice work, Jim.

I am 99% certain that this was one of the great majority of M645 lenses which underwent no optical formula change (other than coatings) from C -> N.
joseph_dickerson
Ray,
That's probably true, but there were some that are reputedly much better in the "N" versions as compared to the "C" type.
Glad the 80mm macro isn't among them.
JD
