james_glucksman1
I am just curious to know why no one ever seems to talk about this lens. Does it have a bad reputation? Is it just too slow for practical use? It seems like it has a nice compromise between size and reach.
colin carron
I think it ia because it is in direct competition with the Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM. In the reviews I have seen thie non-DO lens comes out slightly better optically, slightly faster than the DO and is also quiite a bit less money. rainer_t
-- "Does it have a bad reputation?" No, but it hasn't got a really good one. The main point is, that its direct competition, the EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS USM is optically very well regarded, and costs only about half of the DO lens. Also, the DO seems to suffer from strange bokeh at times and seems to handle contralight/straylight not overly well.
chrisjb
Rainer has nailed it I think, the lens gives a doughnut type bokeh shape towards bright light, reminds me of the old mirror lenses, you either like it or hate it :)
adam_gifford
I think its mainly price.... its so much more expensive than the 70-300 IS USM that its hard to justify the features and issues the DO has. That being said... i'd like one for the size and ring usm, but i just couldn't justify the price increase over the non-do model.
JeffOwen
It does have a strange bokeh on occasions but I bought mine for the compact size. I do a lot of travelling and it fit just fine in my photo bag together with a Canon 10-22 and a 17-85. Basically I am very pleased with it.

yakim_peled1
It suffers from the same problem the 400/4 DO has: Too expensive. Especially when you consider the options. Happy shooting, Yakim.
xavier_henri
It's expensive, but it has small size, range, fast and full time manual focusing (a must have for me :-) and a non rotating front element for the polarizing filter.
Is it worth the price ? This is debatable...
Anyway, it is not too slow on modern DSLRs with good high ISO as you can see on these few shots.
