6 lenses. Which would you choose?

1. OK, Father Christmas knocks on your door and says you can have any 6 lenses you want in exchange for all the lenses you currently own. What would they be? (And you can't sell them for financial gain!)
Here's my choice:
24-105 f4 L IS
70-200 f4 L IS
300 f4 L IS
500 f4 L IS
50 f1.2 L
And, no... I don't want the 1200 f5.6 L as it won't go in my camera bag!
2. I'm not sure I can fill the order for six, but...20/2.8, 35/2, 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 20-35/2.8 L, and in place of the last lens, I would like polarizing, red, and orange filters for each of the thread sizes. And I believe that would do nicely. And thanks for causing that lens envy to come crawling back to the surface, Jamie; I had subdued it so nicely for a while. JR
3. Nice Christmas game.
O.K. I am pretty happy with my current lens array, so I wouldn't trade it with Santa. But I would ask for a couple of lenses that are in my wish list.
24 f1.4 LII
85 f1.2 LII
4. This reminds me of those "What would you do with a million dollars?" games. Fun to play, but quite depressing once reality sets in.
Those 6 boxes would definitely cause involuntary bowl movements on Christmas morning!
5. I would trade up two:

45 TSE
And beg for the rest:
Nikkor 14-24
6. Nice, although 6 isnt really enough....
50 f/1.4
85 f/1.8
135 f/2.0
200 f/2.0
ts-e 45
and whatever lens took this:
If Santa was being nice (I've been good this year I promise), I'd also like the MP-E and finally a single zoom 17-40 f/4.0. Should be enough after that...
7. I am actually pretty happy with what I have.
I guess I would make my 70-200 2.8 the IS Version and maybe ad a 35 1.4. Since its the season of giving someone else can have my other 4. happy holidays all.
8. 1. A Ring USM 50 mm 1.4 (doesn't exist yet)
2. Since I already have an 85mm and the 2.8L zooms, my 2nd would be ... 24 1.4 L
3. The 135L
4. 300 2.8
5. None
6. None, I am satisfied.
9. 300 2.8
400 2.8
70-200 IS 2.8
85 1.2
10. small 45/2.8 - doesn't exist
lightweight 85/2.8 - doesn't exist
small 300/4.5 - doesn't exist
plus small, silent and light (but not a toy) ff camera! - doesn't exist either
But it is just me.
11. O.K. I have reconsidered after seeing Diego's and Ken Papai's choice.
I want to add the 135L
12. Too easy
Ah - and some assitant to carry those for me...
13. I can't get it down to just six...
600 f/4 IS (first to go...)
500 f/4 IS
300 f/2.8 IS
100-400 IS
70-200 f/2.8 IS
24-105 f/4 IS
17-55 f/2.8 IS
14. You need the 15mm fisheye.
15. would swap my 50mm f1.8 mk2 for a mk1
would swap my 135mm SF, 70-300 IS & maybe maybe my 200 2.8L II for a 100-400 IS L
would keep my 28mm f2.8 as its a cracker on a compact aps-c body.
would get somebody who knew how to work a 24 TS-E to help me get the best from mine
would ask sigma to redesign the 70mm f2,8 macro as IF (it's only flaw!)
would ask them to make their 10-20 a stop faster and constant
would ask agfa to sell the technology for Scala to somebody else
would ask a higher entity for better weather, or at least interesting rain rather than drizzle, in my neck of the woods.
16. 500/4
MP-E 65mm/2.8
MT 24EX (not a lens but...)
17. I used to use all my Nikon glass on a Canon DSLR but for the moment I have switched to a Kodak full frame DSLR. Perhaps at some point I will switch back to a Canon full frame DSLR, but in any case I hope you do not mind me chiming in. I am happy with the six lenses that I already have but would see if Santa would add the Nikon 8mm f2.8 AIS circular fisheye.
He could always surprise me with a Nikon 6mm f2.8 AIS instead and throw in a Nikon 300/2 AIS and Nikon TC-14C. Now that would make for a very Merry Christmas indeed!
18. It would be prime time for me....
14mm / 2.8 L
85mm / 1.2 L
135mm / 2.0 L
200mm / 2.0 IS L
300mm / 2.8 IS L
500mm / 4.0 IS L
19. 16-35 f/2.8L II
24-70 f/2.8L
70-200 f/2.8L IS
200 f/2L IS
300 f/2.8L IS
600 f/4L IS
20. My choices (4 lenses is enough):
Canon 14/2.8
Zeiss 21/2.8
Zeiss 35/2.0
Canon 70-200/4.0 IS
Unfortunately, it's going to be Xmass 2090 before Zeiss gets off their duffs and releases those lenses in the EF versions it seems. Sigh.
21. Hmmm...only one macro shooter here so far? My three favorites...
100 f/2.8 Macro
24-70 f/2.8L
70-200 f/2.8L IS
I would add...
50 f/1.2L
16-35 f/2.8L
600 f/4L IS
22. I suppose I have to get the bigger bag myself:
14mm f/2.8L II
24mm f1.4L II
TS-E 45mm f/2.8 (Ooo. Extra knobs.)
85mm f/1.2L II
180mm f/3.5L Macro
300mm f/2.8L IS or a 50mm f/1.2L (don't use long lenses as much as I thought I would).
23. 17-55
35 1.4L
50mm 1.2
70-200 f4 IS
24. It is very nice post IMO !
I might not be very useful, since the author seem uses Canon, but nevertheless, taking about Nikon i would suggest:
1. 14-24 /2.8
2. 24-70 /2.8
3. 50 /1.4
4. 70-200 /2.8 VR
5. 300 /2.8 VR
6. 500 /4 VR
25. I am not asking for the most expensive stuff or all six, but I'd like
1. 70 - 200L IS f/4, the sharpest lightest zoom for my travels
2. EF 85 f/1.8 for portraits
3. EFS 10 - 22 for travel
4. EFS 60 Macro f/2.8
Then I would like some more umbrellas, new bag, ohh and 3 pocket wizards... Dream on, and keep saving...
26. On FF, I could manage at a pinch with five:
24~105/4L IS
70~200/4L IS
100~400/4L IS
Macro 100/2.8USM
but, hey, I'm lucky, I don't need Father Christmas to get involved!
27. I'd sell The body and go with a new M7 with 35/50/90 summicrons or summilux's.
• 17-40/4L
• 24-105/4L
• 70-200/4L IS
• 24/1.4L
• 50/1.2L
• 85/1.2L
and I buy the 135/2L myself
28. Zeiss 21 2.0 Distagon
16-35L II
500 5.6L
82 1.2L
200 2.0L IS
300 2.8L IS
29. 24-70 L
24 L
35 L
50 L
135 L
70-200 L
I have four of the six, so four down and 2 to go.
30. Interesting: none specify what type body these lenses would be put on.
31. For my 20D body
sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 (although faster would be nice)
canon 50 f/1.8 (although a mk II->mk I would be nice or replacement by sigma 50 f/1.4 even better)
tokina 100 f/2.8 macro
New ones:
Sigma 30 f/1.4
Canon 85 f/1.8
Canon 70-200 f/4 (and if santa is nice a 1.4 extender)
Zooms for extremes of my range and 3 primes & 1 macro for middle range.
32. This is a fun dreamers thread!
So far I dig my gear... but have room for improvement.
Sigma 10-20... please make it faster
17-55... is beautiful, santa please deliver B&W UV filter.
50 f1.4... nice optics, but seriously better build and focusing needed.
New ones,
Sigma 30 f1.4
EF-S 60 f2.8 Macro
70-200 f2.8 IS
ps Santa please bring 1 excellent tripod, a couple strobes and a sling bag!
33. I'm also pretty happy with my setup, especially now that I have replaced a 70-200 f/2.8L with the IS version of the same lens. But I might consider upgrading my 17-40 f/4L with the 16-35 f/2.8L II (thus bringing all my zooms into the f/2.8 area). I'd also love to have a long lens, like a 500mm so that when I finally do go to Africa I'll have something long enough to capture animals from far away.
34. 16-35L
70-200L 2.8 IS
300 2.8 IS
500 4 IS
50L 1.2
35. 16-35 L
24- 105 f/4L IS (my usual "walking around" lens)
24 - 70 2.8L (to use as a "walking around" lens when I'm indoors)
70 - 200 f4 IS
100 - 400 L
50 1.2
But most of these are just upgrades. I'd be happy to keep my 17-40, 24-105, 50 1.4 and 85 1.8, get the two long zooms and let Santa bring some more "toys" to good boys and girls.
36. 14/2.8L II
24/1.4L II
85/1.2L II
180/3.5L Macro
37. 16-35L
24-70 f/2.8
70-200 f4 L IS
300 f4 L IS
100 f/2.8 macro
50 f1.2 L
38. Since I'm one photog that doesn't want to carry excess baggage a
Nikkor 200-400
would do just fine.
39. The best choice for me would be:
10~22mm f/3.5-4.5
100mm f/2.8 Macro
28~105mm f/3.5-4.5
70~200mm f/2.8L IS
50mm f/1.2L
500mm f/4

Good Luck dude.
40. Another Nikon user slipping in here:
16mm Fisheye
14-24 f/2.8
17-35 f2.8
50 f/1.4
70-200 f/2.8
300 f/4.0
41. You folks aren't greedy enough. I want a Sigma 200-500/2.8.

Please purty please
42. Yet another Nikon user...

70-200 f2.8 VR
300 f2.8 VR
500 f4
105 f2.8 Micro-Nikkor VR
24-70 f2.8
1.4x Tele
43. I use Canon, but if I use Nikon
14-24 f/2.8
24-70 f/2.8
70-200 f/2.8 VR
200 f/2 VR
300 f/2.8 VR
600 f/4 VR
As you can see, very similar what I want for Canon
44. Simple
Here are my most used 6 lenses.
16-35 f/2.8 L
24-70 f/2.8 L
70-200 f/2.8 IS L
135 f/2 L
300 f/2.8 IS L
(The following are used about the same - depending on assignment)
85 f/1.2 L
400 f/2.8 IS L
600 f/4 IS L
45. My list is for Nikkor:
24mm PC-E
35mm f1.4
85mm f1.4
180mm f2.8
500mm f4
and a partrigde in a pear tree.
46. 400D user here.
50/1.8 (the 400d plus a 50/1.8 is such a cool lightweight combo)
70-200/4 IS
100/2.8 Macro
(If santa would throw in a 5D -any version- the list would change a little but not a lot probably.)
Regards, Matthijs.
47. The six most expensive lenses then I would sell them and take the cash.
48. 70-200 f/2.8 IS
100 f/2.8 macro
TS-E 24 f/3.5L tilt-shift
135 f/2.8 soft focus
15mm f/2.8 or EF-S 10-22
I'm not giving up my EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 unless Santa's bringing me a 5DmkII + 24-105 f/4L in exchange for it and my 40D
49. 14mm f/2.8 L II - sometimes you need to see everything at once
24mm f/1.4 L II - my favorite lens
50mm f/1.2 L - just because I want to try it
85mm f/1.2 L II - just in case Santa wants to do some modeling when he drops by
TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L - just because I miss my old large format motion
100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L - just in case I can't get close
Well, I am waiting patiently for the sound of reindeer hooves. Hmmm. It's nice to dream. This is much better than sugarplums, whatever they are. :)
Happy holidays all,
50. I will Thank Father Christmas for his Kind Gesture. I am very happy with my Canon 50mm 1.8, 18 - 55 IS and 55 - 250 IS.
51. If Father Christmas knocks on the door of a Nikon user, the choice is as follows:
1) 24 - 70 / 2.8
2) 70 - 200 / 2.8 VR
3) 200 - 400 / 4 VR
4) 105 2.8 VR Micro
5) 400 / 2.8 VR
6) 600 / 4 VR
Thanks Father Christmas (I have 14 - 24 / 2.8 and D300)
52. 50mm 1.2
24mm 3.5 TSE
24-70mm 2.8
85mm 1.2
800mm 5.6
70-200mm 2.8 IS
and would live happilly ever after :)
53. My 28-300mm IS L is 6 lenses and weighs as much, but I love it!
54. my list would be:
zeiss 21/2.8 new version
35L or Leica ASPH
or I would just ask for the 1200L, sell it afterwards and buy more than 6:)
55. 1 sigma 200-500 F2.8 or a canon 400 f2.8 with a x1.4 the 1 with the best IQ ( i dont think santer will notice the x1.4 so 1 lens
2 sigma 12-24mm @12mm! ! ! that will be sooooo wide on my 5D
3 135mm F2
3 70-200 f4IS
4 50 f1.2L
5 TS-E 24 f/3.5L tilt-shift
6 28-70f2.8L
will not give up my 17-55f2.8IS. or my 17-35f2.8L this was my first L glass......
56. For my 40D:
50mm f1.2L, 135mm f2L, 300 f2.8IS
10-22, 24-105IS, 70-200 f4IS
57. just pick the ez the treasure 1200mm5.6 in case you doesn't like it later you can exchange the other 3 lens . good luck
58. 24L MkII
Sigma 50/1.4
100 macro
Why does anyone need to cover 16 to 500mm?
59. Canon
16-35 f2.8L II
24 f1.4 L II
35 f1.4 L
50 f1.2 L
85 f1.2 L II
135 f2 L
60. Well, let's see, the lenses currently on my shopping list are:
1. Tokina 12-24
2. Canon EF 24/2.8
3. Canon 35/1.4
4. Canon 65mm MP-E
5. Canon 90/2.8 TS-E
6. Canon 135/2
7. Canon 200/2 IS
8. Canon 800/5.6 IS
I know, I know. That's eight lenses, not six.
I'll be waiting until there's a huge rebate on the 200/2 and 800/5.6 anyway. Canon's list prices on those two are pretty ridiculous. There's no reason the 200/2 is worth nearly 50% more than the comparable Nikkor. Heck, I can buy a D700 *and* the 200/2 VR for less than the Canon lens! There are few direct comparisons with the 800/5.6, but it's also massively overpriced, IMHO. Very long teles like that are usually pretty simple, optically, and the Sigma 800/5.6 is 40-45% less than the Canon... Granted it doesn't have IS and isn't an 'L'.
Most of my choices (all but the Tokina) are specifically for the planned addition of full frame DSLRs to my kit this coming year.(I really don't want 21MP or video, but a lot of the other upgrades made to the 5D Mk II are pretty attractive.)
And, sorry, but I'm only giving up one of my current 13 lenses. All the rest have to stay in the kit, or this entire exercise really isn't worth doing.
61. For use with a 1v and or a 5d (so, full frame):
- 15mm/f2.8 fisheye
- 35mm/f1.4
- 85mm/f1.2 II
- 100mm/f2.8 USM macro
- 70-200mm/f2.8 IS
- 500mm/f4 IS
I might be tempted to swap the 135mm/f2 or a 400mm/f2.8 IS for the fisheye, but I'd want more time with each before making that choice. I might also be tempted to shoehorn the Zeiss 21mm in there somehow. But anyway, the six above would be fine -- so all Father Christmas needs to do is get me the 500 (used is fine with me) and he can haul off everything else not listed above.
62. 16-35/2.8*
*Already have, sell my truck and I could complete the set!
63. My selection:
• 16-35/2.8
• 24-70/2.8
• 70-200/2.8IS
• 100mm f/2.8 macro
• 50/1.2
• 300/2.8
I actually have the first four and the 50/1.8... so I guess Santa has been good to me in previous years. (In theis case, Santa = me).
64. Has, or will anyone now tally up the results?
Glancing at these #1 seems to be the 16-35/2.8 L. #2 the 70-200 2.8L IS.
65. Being a nerd when it comes to numbers, I counted. To this point in the thread, the most mentioned lenses were:
• 50 1.2 L (20)
• 16-35 2.8 L (16)
• 70-200 2.8 L IS (15)
• 135 2 L (15)
• 85 1.2 L (14)
• 300 2.8 L IS (13)
• 24-70 2.8 L (12)
• 70-200 4 L IS (11)
• 500 4 L IS (11)
• 24 1.4 L (10)
• 35 1.4 L (10)
If I were picking my own half dozen - assuming Santa also brought a 5D - they would be:
• 14 2.8 L
• 24-105 L
• 70-200 4 L IS
• 50 1.2 L
• 100 2.8 Macro
• 400 4 L IS
66. I'm a Leica fan but since I want to take more photos of my baby girl, I'm planning to buy a Canon 5D...since it is such a good camera (good image quality).
I realised that nowadays loads of point and shoot cameras are already quite capable of producing very good quality pictures (Canon G9, G10, Panasonic LX3,...etc), so I thought if one decided to use a full frame DSLR, one should use the best lenses to realise the advantages over using point and shoot ones. Otherwise, there is no point to invest so much.
My achievable list is:
Sigma 50mm f1.4 (new design)
Tamron 70 - 180 f2.8 (new design)
Carl Zeiss 21mm f2.8 (Canon mount) (to be released)
Nikon 500mm f8 mirror reflex (adapter)
Leica 35mm f2 (adapter)
Pentax 28mm f3.5 SHIFT (adapter)
My dream list is:
Canon 300mm f2.8 IS
Leica 28mm f2.8 PC
Leica 60mm f2.8 Macro
Leica 90mm f2 APO ASPH
Leica 100mm f2.8 APO Macro
Leica 180mm f2.8 APO
Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.4 (Canon - to be released)
Carl Zeiss 21mm f2.8 (Canon - to be released)
Olympus OM 24mm f3.5 SHIFT
Pentax 15mm f3.5 Aspherical
Nikon 28mm f1.4D Aspherical
