enviousphoto
My display blinks non stop. I pushed in both the catchlight and the wide angle screen, and it still flashes. Anyone have any idea how to fix this? chris
will king
Have you replaced the batteries?
enviousphoto
Yeah, It has been blinking for the last 4 or 5 times I have shot. It doesn't seem to affect the flash outcome, but its annoying blinking on my face all the time, and I'm sure it doesn't help the batteries. RobertChura
page 48 of manual states the wide panel has been pulled out for bounce flash.
enviousphoto
Yeah, I heard the same thing, but its not. Both the catchlight and the wide panel are pushed in fully.
drfl
Do you have the flash positioned at something other than straight on? For instance do you have it swiveled up or to the side. This can cause it to flash.
enviousphoto
For the most part I am bouncing the flash, so I don't have it pointed straight forward. But I just tried it straight forward and it blinks like crazy still. Even when I am not pressing the shutter button. Chris
drfl
Did you try it straight forward at the level angle or swiveled up?
JeffOwen
My guess is that the wide panel switch is faulty and it thinks it is out and down.
jimstrutz
I had an older 540EZ that did this. It was the switch on the pull out diffuser screen. I don't have a 580EX, but on my 550EX, if I pull out the screen part way, the LCD blinks, but if I have it all the way in, or all the way out and down across the flash head, the blinking stops. Try both of your screens all the way out and down to see if that changes anything. If nothing else this should force the zoom head to display 16mm and M in the viewfinder. If nothing changes, it's got to be the switch. If things do change, it's probably the part of the screen inside that trips the switch, or the spring that is attached to it. NK Guy
Jim's right. Probably a broken catchlight switch.
margaret_flores
Hi Christopher, my flash does exactly the same and it throws the flash for long periods of time, without me even pressing the button. The blinking of the display screen is driving me crazy and i only use it on ETTL. Have you found out why it does this? Anyone?
