derek_simpson
I purchased a cheapie wireless trigger (Hong Kong via ebay) - works fine on 550EX but when attached to 580EX the flash fires spontaneously at regular intervals. Can Anybody point to a reason for the difference ? I can set 550 to master 580 as slave and it works ok given everything is in manual - but why the 580 behaviour? Other than the obvious "it is broke" obviously.
jim_larson1
You got a "cheapie wireless trigger". . .from Hong Kong. . .and wonder why it doesn't work fully with Canon equipment that uses proprietary communications protocols?
kin_lau
RF interference. Try switching to channels 3 or 4 if you have the 4 channel units. I had the same problem with my 540EZ (mostly) and 580EX (less). If it's a single channel unit, then try wrapping the receiver in some foil. I do have my GadgetInfinity units working with my 580EX, 540EZ, 420EX and other assorted manual flashes. Actually, manual flashes are much better suited to these manual triggers. fourfa
what's proprietary about closing a circuit? we're not talking about ETTL here, just simple triggering. same as a pocketwizard.
derek_simpson
Thank you Kin thank you Andy - Jim is there not something you could be doing ? Like the man said all I want is a trigger - just like the studio one I bought at the same time which works perfectly with the big lights. Very versatile gadgets - more so than the proprietary Canon wallet stripper.
fourfa
there's quite a bit of chatter about these devices on the strobist flickr forum. apparently some of the Canon flashes emit radio interference in the same band used to trigger. try lengthening the sync cable and hanging the receiver 12" or more from the flash
derek_simpson
Thanks again Andy - changing channel did the trick but good info is good info. Awkward that Canon don't include a sync cord terminal so one would have to lash up a cord to hot shoe link for this to work. After using these things almost exclusively in ETTL for press work I'm begining to enjoy using my brain - not too much - Cheers
