l_a_k_h_i_n_d_e_r
I had some fully stoppered (plastic 2 liter) xtol developer sitting in my garage. It was mixed in March 1997! Being a bit impatient, I decided to try it on a test roll. And finally developed a total of 4 rolls: of 120 Kodak Tmax100, and 35mm Ilford Delta 400. The negatives look okay, even with a 5 year old developer. It is just that I used about 16oz (~450 ml) of developer for each film. Normally I can work with 125mm of fresh Xpan per film. I have not done any scientific analysis to claim that things are 100% identical to a fresh developer.
barry schmetter
It doesn't surprise me. I have never seen a loss of DMax with older XTOL solutions. Nothing out to 5 years, but close to year-old solutions produced great negs. Personally, I think XTOL is destined for the chopping block, but I consider it a great developer. Photo Techniques magazine has also confirmed the stability of XTOL.
