40D Flash Symbol

I've searched the manual and don't recall seeing this asked before, so here we

go. Sometimes, I do something with my 40D that causes the flash icon to appear

in the top window, and be viewable through eyepiece, and I hae absolutely no

idea what it is I am doing that causes it. I have also been unsuccessful at

getting rid of it without going into the menu and clearing all the camera

settings. Typically, happens when shooting in low-light.

Any suggestions as to what I may be doing, and then the corresponding thing(s)

to undo it would be most appreciated as it is a pain in the pittoozie to have

to put all the camera settings back.

TIA

Do you mean the lightening bolt with +- next to it? That's the flash exposure compensation

icon. It appears when you press the FEC button and/or set FEC.

Page 18 of your manual identifies it on the LCD. Page 101 explains how to use it. Ain't

indexes great?

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

I thought all it meant was the the flash was charged and ready to fire. If you never pop the flash up, I don't think it should ever come on in normal operation. I'd expect it to come on if you're using the flash as the AF illuminator in low-light, but it should go off if you push the flash down again.

If it's the one with +/- next to it, all it means is that flash exposure compensation is set.

Puppy - yes, that is the icon. Yes, I've scoured that bloody manual over and over and could not find that information. I haven't been using the pop-up or external flash when it comes on, so my presumption is that I've probaby been meaning to set ISO, and have turned the wrong wheel and set FEC instead.

DOH!
