2010 Picture of the Year

Well, I humbly started this thread last year. Again, this year I was hoping a more advanced photographer would take the initiative as I have not progressed nearly as much as I would have liked to by now. Anyways, the usual rules apply. Just submit one image you really like. This image was taken in Newport, Rhode Island actually just a wee bit shy of 2010. Javier made some really nice comments about it so it's my pick. I know I should post images I really like, but always seem to try to find ones others would appreciate. This image was taken with my K10D and 16-45mm DA. I was on a walk near the sea and my subjects were just about to exit the opposite end of this tunnel. I quickly stopped, pointed, held my breath and let the camera auto focus. Tunnel Vision

This year has been a good year for me, my shot of a sparrow taken during holidays in BC Canada along Canyon Creek is one that sticks out. With the limited depth shot at F3.2 on a moving target made for an interesting capture. Taken with a k7 sigma 300mm 2.8 iso 800 manually focused

Not near enough shooting going on over here, paid or otherwise. And this one was even shot by Matt (hopefully obvious, since I'm in it!)
Story - after 86 years of living in KS, I moved my Grandma from Wichita to Knoxville, TN a year ago this week. Wanted to go back w/ the family over the summer and see her & the mtns. It had to wait until the middle of Oct. Obviously, the upside of this is getting to see fall in the Smokey Mtns. Our last morning, we drug the kids out of bed at 5am to watch the sunrise.
Matt decided to take a family photo, and he was not happy with any of his results, fiddling, and changing, and not moving faster than the sun. He was disappointed. I happen to love it - and it's the FIRST one, of course! (He about died when I told him)

00XyfY-317949684.jpg.05dbc94bbdd84074e69a21dbdcef2347.jpg

I guess if I have to pick my fave of the year, it'd be this one. Taken on the boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach, DE. with my K10 & 21mm DA Ltd. Like Bob's, it drew a compliment from Javier, who I consider to be DA MAN in street shooting. It's one of the few that, when I look back at it, I'm still happy.

00Xyfr-317957584.jpg.709c8df8c5bd894d3cda41a14d6cb5b1.jpg

Thank you Bob Marz, once again, for initiating this fine thread.

Photographically this has been a rewarding year on a few levels. I’m really satisfied with the improvement in my sports and bird photography. It’s good to test one’s reflexes at my age :) Artistically I harvested a few seeds planted the year prior before things changed on the home front. One fun followup: my piece in the local arts auction from the fall ended up attracting a little bidding thumb fight. It sold for a nice percentage over the retail listing which meant that the sponsoring arts organization got more money and my true expenses were paid. Amazing.

The normalcy of 2011 will allow me to better focus on preparing for exhibitions next year. I’m also expecting a few more commissions which may make it tempting to go for that 645D. For this thread I’m posting my favorite shot rather than my most artful. I’ve posted it here before and it’s self-explanatory.

Good pick ME, and great stuff all around. I also have a tough time picking a single shot, not because they are all so great but because I just don't know and my tastes change.
So I looked at my Flickr stats and sorted by "interestingness" and this was the top one.

I would not say this is my best of the year but certainly the best representation of my community this year. This fire station is only three years old. SO, my question is if the station is closed for emergencies what are they open for?
I took this with my K-x 18-55 at about a 38 focal with a f/11 exposure time 1/4000 and ISO 0f 6400.

Thanks, Bob.
I feel that this has been a breakthrough type of year for me. I am finally feeling like I have some sense of what I am doing with the camera. I am more in control. I have become much more selective. I actually made some money with this hobby this year! The year really got started for me when I captured this shot of Lucy, the daughter of a colleague of mine at work. Our school was putting on a play and they needed some young children on the stage. I went backstage during a performance and sat behind the curtain with my camera (sorry, the Canon 50D) fixed on the side of her head hoping she would turn and look at me at some point. I was just getting ready to bag it when she turned. It may not be my best of the year, but probably my favorite.

00Xyiy-318027584.jpg.4d30e2dcea12ff30afbb7ff80c0e8ecf.jpg

Thanks for starting this, Bob--reflecting on the past year's results is instructive. Although I wouldn't describe it as a breakthrough year for me (but agree that it applies in your case, Robert), I think I've made some progress in that, while I'm spending more time improving my pp skills, I'm getting more and more shots that require very minimal tweaking. If anything could be described as a breakthrough, though, it's this shot of my father-in-law which got good reviews from that side of the family which has been somewhat wary of my camera.

Here's one, but making such a choice out of dozens of contenders is impossible. I have a few more choices in my blog article.

Looking through the whole year's photos was interesting. a lot of repeat subjects, some successful, some not. I edged into taking posed portraits asking people if I could take their photos on the street. This is nerve-wracking for me, but I've managed to do it a few times. My favorite should have been easier since she saw me snap her and hung around until I finally asked her.

00Xypm-318153584.jpg.f2a1751e5d890e62f88217d9fb969a50.jpg

Unposed picture of a lady with a cigarette holder. Hardly technically perfect - the focus has locked on her right palm - but overall the picture is better than a posed one would have been.
Sorry. I wasn't prompted to upload a picture. I am giving up for now in case there is repeat fiasco.

Wonderful images from everybody!

This is my personal favorite for 2010. I've had to force myself to capture people photos, I don't have an easy time pointing the camera at strangers. This was my first deliberate "people" session, at an Italian car show last summer. It's the little girl looking up at her mom that does it for me- her expression is priceless.
