18-70mm or 18-135mm ???

Hi, I'm selling my Tamron 18-200 and have decided to replace it with one of the

above, largely due to the fact that I don't require so much zoom. So which is

better and why for my D80?

 

I know of the price differentials etc as i'm buying used but would like to know

which will give me better results and a more satisfying ownership?

 

I'm also buying a 50mm f/1.8 shortly and looking for a good 12-24mm used buy.

Simple answer, if you don't need the extra reach of 135mm, then maybe 18-70mm is better. 18-70mm has a metal mount too unlike the 135 version. More solid.

This gives a better review of both lenses than I can write. I chose the 18/70 because it has far less distortion and a metal lens mount that is sealed.

 

I might get the 70/300 VR if I decide I need a longer tele. Do it all 18/200 and 18/135 type lenses have to many design compromises to suit me.

I think the 18-70mm will suit my needs.

I've used both. In my opinion the two are totally at different level , 18-70 is a step higher.

You should have a 18-70, if you need a 135mm or farther, look for another but not 18-135.

The 18-135, like the 18-200 is a little soft above 8x10 enlargements. Whereas the 18-70 outresolves any current Nikon body's sensor.

I like the 18-70mm very much. An excellent lens, and sharp sharp sharp despite what some gear-heads here will tell you. I've made gorgeous 12x18" enlargements from images taken with this lens.

Thanks for you responses. I'll definately acquire the 18-70mm and I expect it will be used more often than any prime or larger zoom lens.

You will not regret getting the 18-70mm zoom or the 50/1.8. I also have the 70-300vr zoom and find that when I use it most of my shots are from 70 to around 135mm, this is also a quality lens.

I've decided on the 18-70mm and 55-200 VR for any zoom requirements.

 

Any thoughts?
