miha_steinb_cher
Is an AI converted 105 f/4 Micro a safe buy? The lens is in a goodcondition, I just want to now whether there may be any conversionrelated issues. Thank you for your answers! Miha
joseph_wisniewski
Yes, there are issues. Some AI conversions only machine the area for aperture coupling, and do not do anything about the area needed for the EE servo lever. Such an AI conversion can damage a D70, D100, D50, N80, N75, N70, N65, N60, N55, FG, etc... Other AI conversions do not check to make sure the flange on the converted lens has sufficient clearance to be used on an AF camera, without the flang striking the camera's contacts when you mount ot unmount the lens, leading to premature contact failure. miha_steinb_cher
Thank you for your answer! The lens would be used by my father mainly on his F3 (even pre-AI Nikons are too modern for my current taste in cameras). The conversion looks perfect, I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for serial number. Anyway, there may be things I've missed. Haven't checked the EE servo coupling post. david_h._hartman
If the AI job is a good one your father should have no problems with the 105/4.0 IC Micro-Nikkor with AI conversion. He should enjoy full aperture metering. He also can flip up the meter coupling lever on the F3 and use stop-down metering via the DOF preview button. I dont think any model of the F3 used the EE Servo Coupling Post though Ive paid little attention to the F3AF. I cant think how that model would use it.

That post is used by cameras like the N80, F80, D70 and similar to assure that the lens is stop down to its minimum aperture. This is not an issue for the F3.

For a review of this lens look for Lenses on the left at...

http://www.naturfotograf.com

once inside the site.

Regards,

Dave Hartman.

PS: I own an F3, 105/4.0 AI and a couple of 55/3.5 Micro-Nikkor Auto(s). The latter are pre-AI lenses and give me no problems with the F3.
miha_steinb_cher
Dave, Thank you for the advice! I know pre-AI lenses can be used with a F3, but wouldnt want to get one for my father. He also has a F80 (although it hasn't seen much use since F3 is around) and he'll probably get a digital body in the future. Bjrn's lens page is a goldmine. MTF testing certainly gives a very precise information on lens sharpnes under test conditions, but never comes close to usefulness of his reviews.
