70-200mm f4L performance with 1.4 II converter

I currently have as my one tele option the very nice 70-200 f4L and

am trying to decide whether to pick up the new 1.4II converter and

the tripod mount. I'm looking to use it with Fuji Press color films

rated at ISO 800-1600 to get closer to shoot my daughter's band

during the upcoming football season and pro sporting events I might

go to. Is anyone out there using this combination that can comment on

their luck using this 98-280mm f5.6 combination for sporting events?

Right now a 300/4 option is financially out of the question.

I occasionally use my EF 70-200 4L USM with the Extender 1.4x. Of course, there is some degradation, especially in terms of flare if you shoot sunsets, but it's reasonably good, slightly better than my EF 75-300 IS USM.

The main gotcha is the rig is really long and white and, thus, tends to draw attention.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

The 70-200 F4L works phenominally well with the Canon TCs.

With 1.4X mk I (optically identical to mk II):
With 2X mk II:
Interesting that you mention the 300 F4 as well, since I use a 300 F4L IS in addition to my 70-200 F4L, and both lenses get used with both teleconverters (and AF on the EOS 3 with either F8 combo is remarkably good). In fact, even stacking the converters can provide usable results (although this is with the 300 F4L IS, rather than the 70-200):
I use the 2X with my 70-200mmf4 and an EOS 3.

I think the quality deteriorates (slides are grainy) but it is still perfectly good for personal use. I assume the 1,4 would have less impact on quality.

If you have an EOS3, the autofocus will still work fine with the 1,4X and only the center square will perform autofocus with the 2X. With the A2 (or EOS 5) the autofocus does not work at all at f8. I am not sure about other bodies.

Given what you said, I think it is reasonable to buy a 1,4X. You will have a perfectly fine (I would even say above average) 280mm that will give you excellent results.

However, I should add that I never shoot sportings events, so I cannot comment on the 98-280mm f5.6...

One last thing, if the game is during daylight (and it is a sunny day), bring a roll of 400iso... it could work fine and the film is less grainy.

Happy shooting!
