Durham, NC - Professional Film Dealer (400NC and 400UC)

Recommended Posts

I'll be in Durham in a few days to help shoot a wedding. Anyone know

a film shop that carries professional film? Close to Duke Univ. would

be nice. I'd like to load up before returning to the wilds of central

Florida (where I'm stuck with mail order for pro. film.)

Thanks.

Try Camera Works at 2611 W Carver St, Durham, 919-477-1189 (http://cameraworks.citysearch.com). I haven't looked closely at their selection, since I order from B&H, but they definitely do have a fridge containing some Portra. They're not too far from where I'm sitting right now at Duke, maybe a 10 minute drive or so. They also have a good collection of used gear, if you're in the market for something, although I think their prices are a little high.

If they don't work out, second choice would be Southeastern Camera and Supply (www.southeasterncamera.com/carrboro.html) which has a smaller stock and is further away (in Chapel Hill, about a 40 minute drive).

I'm not aware of anywhere else around here that might have pro film.

Out of curiousity, where's the wedding going to be held?

Rana beat me to it with Southeastern Camera...They have stores in both Raleigh and Chapel Hill (actually Carrboro, but the two are adjacent), but Chapel Hill's a little closer, as well as being a cute town to visit. But neither is as close as Camera Works.

SEC is a kodak pro dealer and has stores in Carrboro and Raleigh (and wilmington), and they also own a small lab over in chapel hill, Flash Photo, near Granville Towers at UNC. Sam Bass Camera (now Ritz) in Raleigh (Cameron Village) is a Fuji & Kodak Pro dealer as well, but prices tend to be a bit higher there. There're also some smaller stores like American Fast Photo in N. Raleigh that sell supplies but also has one of the best labs in the area. On the other side of the triangle , near Burlington/G-Boro you have a couple of large stores--Camcor (used to be camera corner) and Carolina Camera--both of these stores do alot of large volume sales. There's Camera Works in Durham, which is a small store that does repairs...and there may be at least one camera shop in Cary. If you're into digging through a treasure trove of used equipment & ephemera, SEC in Raleigh can't be beat...the problem is that it depends on how much film you need, it could be camcor/car. camera would be the place to go because sometimes the selection can be limited at some of these other places. Have a good trip.

John,

You might want to call the shop ahead of time and prepay for the film and have them to hold the film for you if you can. Southeastern and Sam Bass sometimes run out of some pro films, not often but you don't want it to be before the wedding.

Southeastern Raleigh 919-836-2222

Southeastern Chapel Hill 919-933-7757

Sam Bass Raleigh 919-832-4438

Wolf Camera Crabtree Valley Mall Raleigh 919-782-7617

I second Chuck's suggestion...call beforehand ! This ain't New York City and the last thing you want to do is to run from pillar to post searching frantically for film.

Of course we'll always have Wal-Mart ! ;-)

Happy Shooting !
