How Forgiving is PORTRA 160NC Film?

Recommended Posts

Portra is VERY forgiving. All of it. I was shooting 400NC without realizing that the last person who handled my camera (a friend) had dialed in -2 stops exposure compensation. I had the ISO set 2/3 of a stop high, so in all from the standard 400 it received -1 1/3 stops exposure (even though it was 2 stops less than I wanted). It came out, just very grainy.

If I recall portra should handle 2 stops over exposure better than 2 stops under, by a long shot. Although you'll have different problems.

Just about any colour negative film should handle +2 better than -2.

Two stops over likely won't give results as good as you'd get from a correct exposure, but you're probably OK. Hopefully you weren't counting on retaining lots of detail in highlights ...
