Japan Photos

I posted some pictures from my Japan trip a while ago, but while

getting a lot of hits, I haven't gotten any feedback/ratings. Could

First a couple of technical nitpicks. The files are too big. I don't think they should be larger than 400x600, or, if you are absolutely adamant about displaying large, 600x900 at the very largest. Also, the scans could be better, much better, but perhaps there is nothing you can do about that. The last two are pretty sunsets taken from an aeroplane; they're pretty, but boring. Everyone's got these. By far the most interesting picture of the bunch to me is "Shinto Gate to Nothing." With the fog and minimalist composition it has that spare understated look that comes to mind when I think of rural Japan and, larger, Japanese aesthetic as a whole. The rest don't do much for me; the compositions are somewhat uninspiring. I suggest you read <a href="http://www.photo.net/making-photographs/" >this</a> if you haven't already. Photo net can be a great resource. Look at pictures from the photographers you admire, study the compositions and try to find out what makes them work. Then, go out there, shoot, and shoot some more. It's the only way you'll ever get better.

I looked at the folder and commented some of the pictures. My favourites were the row of lanterns and the buddhas with coins.

I have a policy not to rate anything as I don't believe you can reduce aesthetic or emotional enjoyment of a picture to a numerical scale.

 

Most people get loads of views to their pictures and very few comments or ratings. It is not unusual that you have had 200+ views and no comments.

Yes, I do have a thing for huge files. My cable modem has spoiled me, and now I enjoy looking at pictures that take up 90% of my 19" monitor cranked to 1280x1024.<br>Thanks for the comment on the Shinto Gate; that's my favourite picture of the 10 rolls I took in Japan.<br><br>

Thanks for your comments as well. I definetely agree with your system of not rating files by number; that's precisely why I believe that the comments are so valuable. I wasn't surprised that I hadn't had any ratings; I just wanted some constructive criticism on my first big trip with a real camera.<br><br>
