1910-1912 No. 1 folding buster brown

Recommended Posts

I have started to restore a 1910-1912 No. 1 folding buster brown

camera. The bellows show signs of thin spots that let in light, and

the shutter does not opperate well when you point the camera in an

upwards direction. What is the best treatment for the worn bellows

and the sticky shutter. The front of the crmera has 4 small screws

where it comes apart.

On the plus side the camera takes 120 rolls of film with no

modifications.

I have used Black RTV (gasket sealant) to repair bellows. You can get it from a local automotive parts store. Use a toothpick and just smooth a little on a place thats not seen as a test. It's not always the same color (black)but it works well and only uses a little bit. You might be able to apply it from the inside. Leave the camera open while it cures, about a day.

The shutter may be a simple fix. Remove the shutter from the camera and remove the lens and cover off the shutter so you can see the inside of the shutter. Spray the inside of the shutter with "Hornaday One Shot gun cleaner and dry lube". You can buy this at a gun shop or sporting goods store; it works like magic on most cameras. Don't use this on plastic cameras with out testing it first. It doesn't seem to damage paint but you might test it for this also. When the cleaner and dry lube is still wet use canned air to clear the shutter of all the excess cleaner.

Good luck LaMar
