"Appropriate" Slide Film for Portraits

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Yesterday I shot my first slide film EVER (I should've done it

earlier:), and I got some pretty good results. I'm wondering what

slide film is the most "appropriate" for portraits?

Thanks

Astia or Sensia (same stuff) would be my first choice too. K25 (kodachrome 25) is/was a gorgeous film, but but K64 is so much worse, that I regret every single roll of K64 I shot instead K25. As the future of Kodachrome is uncertain at best, this is not a material I would recommend getting into. Try a roll of Sensia/Astia, it is probably the best slide film for slidefilm starters due to its lower contrast and one of the best E6 portrait films too. EPP would be my next choice and there are probably other good Kodak films, I'm just not familiar with them.

Djordje:

First you have to define 'portraiture'. For the classic studio portrait look, Astia/Sensia or some other moderate contrast/moderate saturation film would be the choice for a 'conventional' look. Kodak's EPN100 or E64 (if they're still available) work well too.

On the other hand, in the hands of a skillful photographer, even contrasty, supersaturated Velvia (or contrasty but less saturated K64/Velvia 100f) can produce powerful portraits - viz. David Alan Harvey's or Alex Webb's work in National Geographic.

It really depends on whether you are shooting portraits to satisfy the subject (in which case convention wins) - or to satisfy your own artistic/journalistic vision (in which case the best film is the one that produces the final image YOU prefer).

Kodak E200, also known as EliteChrome 200, is very good for portraits. It has a pleasing amount of saturation that isn't excessive, and the contrast is lower than most slide films, which makes it quite good for flesh tones.

As others have said, Astia/Sensia 100 and Kodachrome 64 are good portrait films too. Personally, E200 would be my first choice.
