What do you know about Brazil?

What specific region are you talking about? Brazil has an extension of more than 8 million square kilometers, a bit smaller than USA.

I would guess that, for picture taking purposes, a photo-safari thru Pantanal wetlands is the best choice. But, as you can imagine, there are hundreds of options, including coast, country, mountain, cold and hot climate (now it's winter) etc.

Hope I can help :)

Thanks, Alex

One should definitively visit the falls by november-march.

At this time it's rainy season, and they become really misty-call...

And if one is brave enough, take a trip in the boat shown at lower right. Be prepared to get real wet (-:

Oh, and use a Nikonos.

I did take a boat trip to below the falls where you pointed out (not the Devils Throat) and did get a bit wet. I had my F4S which survived the deluge very well. Spent 3 days there, and enjoyed it very much. I thought that the visit to the dam was overrated, but OK.

I was working in Argentina and had a little bit of time on my hands, so I travelled to both Tierra del Fuego and Iguazu (Spanish spelling). I literally was smuggled (many times) in and out of Brazil as I did not have a Brazillian visa.

So, you had all the possible fun!

I agree that the dam is overrated (aren't all of them?)

I would like to go to Argentina but to Bariloche and across the Andes, up to Chile. I understand it's very beautiful. Up to now, only Buenos Aires.

Humm, does Brazilan immigration knows about that? ((-:

Thanks for the replies. I'm actually from Brazil. The purpose of the question is to find out how much people know about the country. I'm not really looking for tips. I write photo guides for off the beaten track destinations in Brazil and this kind of information is a great help.

So it was a trick question then?

Perhaps worth mentioning at the start that you're a guide book writer doing market research, as everyone has taken the time to respond helpfully as they assume you're a photographer going on a trip there.

Just my thoughts, others may or may not agree.

The truth is always a good way to start.

On this site, had you been honest, it is likely you would still have gotten a great deal of useable information. Now, everyone knows they've been duped. It does not bode well for you or your organization.

You should be banned from this site.

My sincere apologies to all. It was not my intention to dupe anyone. Im an amateur photographer who loves travel and writing. An anglophile from an early age, I spent many years living in the UK and knew nothing about my own country, Brazil.

On returning home a few years ago, I started discovering the other side of Brazil through photography. Last year, I was asked by a UK online magazine to write an article/photo guide. I wrote about photographing Rio de Janeiro - where I live - and loved doing it, not just for the sake of writing and showing my photos, but also because I wanted to show people out there that there is more to Brazil than football, carnival and girls in g-string. Ever since, I have made it my mission to show the world the incredible beauty of my country, and have written guides to photographing Fernando de Noronha, The Chapada Diamantina and am in the process of writing one about Itacaré, places most people abroad have never heard of. And if it makes anyone happy, Im not getting paid for it!

As a participant of many photography Forums - both in the US and the UK, it was clear to me that the general lack of interest in Brazil was caused by the lack of visual information about the country and what it has to offer to all kinds of travellers, but in special to the photographer, both amateur and professional.

When I joined photo.net I noticed that there wasnt a file for South America in the Travel Pages, and asked Bob Atkins for the guidelines for submitting articles. My request was done openly in the Forum. You will also find under Forum /Travel Photography/Uncategorized, my question entitled Dream Photo Destination, dated 2003-06-17 which reads I am writing about photo destinations and was wondering what people's dream photo destination is. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated. The replies provided an insight into what people wanted to photograph. So when I asked what people knew about Brazil, I wrongly assumed, based on my experience of other Forums, that there was no need to explain it all again, that people already knew who I was and what I was doing. I was really surprised to find that the replies came from different people.

It is sad that some peoples immediate reaction was aggressive without checking what was going on before making accusations. I have registered with photo.net on a trial basis and was planning to become a subscriber. Photo.net members get very bad press on other Forum discussions for being aggressive and rude. However, I like to check things before I pass on any judgment. I must say that during the short period Ive been registered with photo.net, Im very pleased with the site, the galleries are of excellent quality, lots of good articles, discussions, tips and most of the people around seem to be friendly and helpful. I was also thrilled to find some other Brazilians on the site. So it seems that people out there are judging the entire photo.net community based on one or two angry/rude members, which is grossly unfair.

If as Connie suggests, photo.net decides to ban my access to the site, there is surely no shortage of other photography sites around. And if I wanted to be dishonest as Connie also suggests I could easily register under another name, couldnt I?

This just leaves me to thank those of you who took the time to reply to my question.

Some comments here who attack the original posted, or even claiming that this post is grounds for banning him, are overreactions, and I wouldn't think they express the policies of the site.

Norle, the fact that you have made some other post stating your general occupation regarding Brazil, does not make us know you personally, nor do we need to remember who you are if we had seen your post. This site has a user base in the hundred thousands.

It is advisable, courteous and good practice, to briefly outline the general purpose of a query and make that query as specific as possible, not only here but in all topic-oriented fora on the net. Had you explained what you're after a little bit better and with a little bit more background you would not only have avoided the grudges of some other fellow members, but you'd also have gotten more useful replies. That is what I think.

I've been around for quite a while, and if you do stick around you'll notice there is great wealth of information, interesting people and usable means to communicate and exchange knowledge. As a photographer and guidebook writer, I believe you will find great value in photo.net, but what you'll find depends greatly on how you ask for it.

So, even though some reactions are exaggerated, you should also not get too warmed up about it, and excercise the nerve to criticize photo.net members in general with the 'support' of ambiguous references from other online venues.

For travel-related advice, I woul also recommend you to have a look at www.bootsnall.com
