walter_strong3
I'm thinking of ponying up the magnifigant sum of $25 for Amphoto's travel photo book The Spirit of the Place. If anybody here has read this book I'd like some feedback. Thanks.
todd_phillips1
I think it's a great book! There is also a video that goes with it. I don't know if Amphoto sells it or not, but I found it a bit better than the book. It shows Bob Krist in working situations and he explains his choices of lenses, as well as other helpful tips. If Amphoto doesn't have the video, some camera stores might as I believe it was sponsored by Nikon. You also might try to order book/video directly from Bob. Can't remember his web site, by try bobkrist.com and see what happens.
mikecat
Great book. It's well written and has beautiful photos (of course!). I fond myself going back to it from time to time. It's got good practical advice about taking great travel photos, and not overly focused on the equipment - which I liked.
tree
I will third Todd and Mike's comments: Krist is definitely worth the $25, and then some. It's the best book on travel photography technique I've come across. One feature I especially like is the interspersed photo essays illustrating things in the text. His lucid descriptions of equipment in the back should be taken to heart as well.
constance_cook
The book is excellent and I enjoyed it the first time and return to it from time to time. About the "excellent back part of the book", it is and it isn't. I take exception to his complaint about "people who have so much equipment they have to ask for help to get it into the overhead bin". Well, bully for him. That means that women, older travelers, and disabled or somewhat disabled would be limited to less equipment than he just because he can lift his gear. Thoughtless.
