Old Nikon F3 Shutter release "locked"

Try a new battery and make sure that the contacts are clean. It is an electronic camera so a dead battery will cause it not to fire. There is a full manual release on the body which I believe will fire the camera at 1/90 sec. It is on the front panel below the self timer. Not having ever owned one of these, I cannot tell you if you have to do something special to use that manual release. Perhaps an F3 user can clue you in on the manual release.

Try the manual release. Swing the little lever shaped like an upside down comma on the LH side of the lens mount (as you look at, not through, the camera) that surrounds the AE lock. It swings about 20 degrees counterclockwise and you can then push it further counterclockwise to release the shutter. This should work even if the battery is dead or removed.

James,

Any update on your F3 problem? I was just wondering if you had got the beast working again? Also for an online reference check out the following site: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/f3manual/index.htm

Best of Luck,
