Pocket Blinds

I am wondering how effective the relatively low cost 'pocket blinds'

are for photographing birds and small mammals. In doing a search on

blinds in general there seem to be mixed opinions on the

effectiveness of using this type of blind. I realize it is not the

most comfortable of blinds but I would only expect to use it for

relatively short periods of time at once..say 1-2 hours.

Hello Howard,

They can be effective, and i have used my own home made versions in the past, although it was often just as effective to wears suitable camouflage clothing and face veil. They can protect you from wind chill during winter, which is a plus, especially as you would be sitting still for periods of time, but in warm weather they can get uncomfortable.

It may also depend on whether the species you are intending on photographing are very twitchy, as any movement of the fabric is likely to give you away. I dont know if profesionally made bag blinds allow all round vision without moving the fabric, but observation and careful planning of where you intend on sitting may make all round vision unnesassary.

A suitable use may be if you observe a ground feeding bird from a distance through binos, and he is making his way along a rivers edge towards you. You may be able to position yourself by a bush/rock/tree, and just wait for it to appear in front of you. In that situation a bag hide may be better than a full blown hide.

They are relatively cheap and light, but wont suit everyone or every situation, but it may be a good investment if it is only for a small part of your overall nature photography.

Best of luck
