david_cuttler
Vic ..I just got back to my home tonight in the SF bay Area after spending a week in Western NY state. I was in the the Buffalo-Rochester area. While I grew up in Detroit, I forgot what cold was untill this last trip, but now I remember! They share your weather in Buffalo. fotografz
When it really gets cold here in Detroit, Michigan we go south...to Canada (look at a map).
cd thacker
It's been absolutely freezing here. Last night I pulled out and put to use my comforter (no, not a Leica), while today, it rained in near torrents and the temperture never got above 65 F (18 C) - all of which is rare, even in winter, in Hawaii. :)
fotografz
Doug, do you need an assistant? I can work cheap, and have my own Leicas. 65 sounds so toasty warm...and rain...isn't that unfrozen snow?
al_kaplan1
It's seventy here in Miami, Florida. I turned down an invite to go fishing today so I can go to some Miami Beach hotel and take pictures of a bunch of doctors. Oh,well. I guess my tan is good enough already. lee_shively
Sixty-five and raining in northern Louisiana. My wife wants me to start a fire in the wood stove to take the chill off.
jorgeortega
It was -40°C (-40°F) in Quebec City last nigth. For anti-war rallies we will have a comfortable -24°C (-17°C) this early afternoon. Let's find out what my cameras are made of!!
oliver_s.
-20° Celsius, that's normal right here at the moment, with approx. 50 cm of snow. It's 20° below my lowest operating temperature. Doug, whatever wage you'd pay Marc, I be satisfied with less!
michael_kastner
In the good old days when we used to go scuba diving between Christmas and New Years Eve in a deep lake here (with or without my Nikonos III but with wet suits, eh) our favourite saying was always "hey, let's get outa da water and have a cold beer to warm up". olivier_reichenbach
Well, Montreal is nice and sunny and - 21 C (-5 F.) That's 16 degrees below the average temperature for Feb.15th. If this is global warming, we surely don't live on the same globe. As for picture-taking, I know my fingers tips will give up before my camera. olivier_reichenbach
Vic, Oliver, Michael... tell us where « here » is. Thanks. ;-)
michael_kastner
Okay, Olivier, you said you want to know. "Here" is Berlin (look at my address). West Berlin. There are only very shallow lakes here, so when we needed real depths, we had to drive out 350 km over 5 h to get back to West Germany. There is a mountain valley there flooded over on purpose in 1955 as a water reservoir. We loved it because there used to be a village on the ground. Remains are still to be found if you know exactly where to look. Now under water, 30-60 m deep. Man, I'm tellin ya, that was really cold. michael_kastner
Actually Olivier, you didn't ask me (nobody else did either) but the positive thing was, outside in the air, even when it was, like, say below zero (°F or °C doesn't matter here) we could still say, hey, let's get into the water, there it's warmer, there the temperature is up to 4°C (32°F)... albert knapp md
Al- How can you be so cruel as to GLOAT over the fact that Florida is not sub-zero! We are freezing here in New York and you made me very jealous. Oh well, off to the METROPOLITAN Opera now for a performance of Don Giovanni. Do you have opera down in sunny Florida, Al? (:>))))
olivier_reichenbach
Albert, did you enjoy this «Don Giovanni»? I heard part of it it on the radio today. I loved Furlanetto (I always do, especially in Leporello), wasn't too fond on the Don, liked the Donna Anna and Zerlina. And the Commendatore. Tremendous. As for Ottavio, I thought he sounded off-tune from time to time. But almost all the singers didn't seem to follow the conductor now and then. Unforgivable in Mozart. What a mess. Sorry for this OT. Opera is passion second only to photography.
cd thacker
Marc, Oliver,
I'd love to have a couple of good assistants - but you pay me, I'm afraid. The price is one M body each. In return you get the most comely women, barely clad, on earth, painted backdrops, in 3D, from South Pacific, and all the poke (pronounced po-kee) (raw fish) you can eat (quite tasty, actually). And of course you get to hang out with me! Let me know when to expect you.
al_kaplan1
Well, Dr. Knapp, I hope you enjoyed the opera. We have it here too but I'm not a fan. And I attended far too much ballet while married to a lady who couldn't exist without it. I'm more into reggae and 60's/70's rock. Today's punishment was having to wear a suit and tie in the heat, plus while driving to and from the shoot I had to drive over the causeway adjacent to some of my favorite fishing waters. I recognized a couple of the boats fishing there including the one I had the chance to be on. Right now it's a rather muggy 73 degrees F.

john_r._fulton_jr.
Just got back from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Trying to do a story on ice sailing, but it was too windy. Yesterday it was in the teens with 25 mph winds so windchill showed about -11F. When I got back to balmy Fort Worth (in the 40's F) my children (5 & 7) laughed as I explained that I drove my car on Lake Geneva. The ice is so thick it's safe to drive on it. Fun. oliver_s.
Oh, things developed while I was away... Olivier: "here" is Munich, Bavaria. Technically German, but independent in practice. North Bavaria is known as Little Siberia.
Fortunately we almost got -5° Celsius yesterday, but it's still way too cold. (Talk about warming your gear for 30 minutes before you can shoot inside a +15° room.)
Doug: I have another suggestion. What about you coming here and taking over my assignments, while I do yours in Hawaii?
Btw we do have opera here. And fishing boats. And driving on ice. Without speed limit, on frozen autobahns!
