joy bhowmik
This subject has probably been beaten around so much that this question would not merit a reply. However, here it is: I have a N80 camera and recently purchased a Sunpak PZ5000AF flash which acts like a dedicated flash unit. No complaints so far. I have taken flash pictures with the flash mounted on the camera flash "shoe" Now comes the difficult part :| I have noticed several occassions when, it would have helped to trigger the Sunpak flash as a slave to the built-in flash- especially for situations where I was getting shadows on portraits on a particular side. I know the Sunpak has slave feature. However, how do I "wire" the Sunpak flash to my camera so that built in flash and Sunpak flash operate simultaneously? angel_o.
This is not possible with the build-in flash. You'll need two Nikon Speedlights, such as the SB-80, SB-28 or SB-26 with a SC-18 or SC-19 cord. Maybe the AS-10 coupling adapter would work with the Sunpak, so you would need only an additional Nikon flash (SB-80, SB-28 or SB-26), a SC-18/19 cord and the AS-10. craig_steuart
Just a thought, try emailing Sunpak (if possible) and ask their Tech/service dept. how it's done.. Or if that doesn't work perhaps the store where you purchased the flash.. Either "SHOULD" be able to help. Good Luck, Craig
hal_bissinger
The only hotshoe mounted flash that will work in conjunction with the built in flash is the SB-50DX. This is not a slave operation either. They are made to work together. <p> For off camera you can use the SC-17 cord, however I don't believe you can use the built in flash at the same time. The SB-80DX is capable of wireless TTL operation.
Jerry_
Have you tried this with the camera in manual mode? You may have to give up TTL mode (flash operation) to use a slave flash.Without the Nikon cords, TTL won't work right with a single slave flash triggered by the built-in N80 flash. walter_sudetic
two of the 'cheaper' (<$100) solutions are to: 1) get an SC17 TTL flash cord and a flash bracket Stroboframe/Newton, or similar). Mount the camera and the flash on the bracket and shoot as before. The bracket lifts the flash high(er) above the lens axis, thereby forcing the shadow low and behind the subject. To this you can add a Lumniquest or similar diffuser/bouncer for softer overall flash look. or 2) Get the Nikon wireless TTL flash trigger unit SU-4. Put your Sunpak flash into SU-4 (and place it anywhere within ~8 meters of the camera) and trigger the SU4/Sunpak via the built in flash unit. The SU-4 comes with a little plastic diffuser which mounts into the camera's hotshoe and screens the built-in flash when it's lifted into position thereby limitting the red-eye you'd normally get with on-camera flash. joy bhowmik
I also came to learn of the Ikelite's Wireless TTL Slave Sensor for NIKON which makes wireless TTL slave function possible with "any" Nikon compatible flash. Does anybody know of this product and whether it truly works as advertised?
