"All Photographers", "All Folders" temporarily disabled?

Hello,

It seems that for the last few weeks (might have been longer) I have

been periodically trying to go to the Gallery menu and then choose

either the All Photographers or All Folders link and I always receive

this message "This feature is temporarily disabled.". Maybe I define

temporarily differently then the rest of the world but when is this

feature going to become available again? Actually a better question

would probably be why has it been disabled? On a more cynical note

one can still rest assured that even though this feature has been

disabled; "In order to increase responsivity these pages are now

being computed every hour". Thanks for your time and any answers.

Carl

I've noticed this also Carl. Friends and colleagues of mine have expressed an interest in viewing some of the photographs I have uploaded to photonet. With the "List Photographers" feature disabled, I'm not sure how this is possible. I suppose I could just give them my password and let them access my workspace, but I would really rather not do that. It seems this has been going on for at least a month now, more than just temporary.

I find it annoying, too. Just another way to make sure that old pictures are buried in the database and never seen by anyone, it seems. There are pictures that I'd like to see again; I know the photographer's name, but how to find their page? Sometimes the search tool helps, but not always.

And for the folders list ? Do you have a search engine for them too ?

Personally, I'd like to find all folders containing the words "new york" or "paris".
But since the "folders list" page has been removed, I can't browse the photo.net database any more ...

Was this functionality deactivated because it used too much resources on the servers ?

The variants of Browse Folders and Browse Photographers that permitted people to list all the photographers and all folders on the site are gone forever. They don't scale to a site that has tens of thousands of folders and photographers.

Listing all the photographers and folders were previously seriously limiting the server. This was not theoretical. Only with these features turned off could we handle the 6.2 million hits that we got yesterday.

If you are looking for a particular photographer, www.photo.net/directory is the best bet.

There should be a convenient way for people who are not photonet members to view the folders of people who are. Someone should be able to come to this site, type a name in the search box, and locate a photographer's workspace. It seems simple enough, but I guess it isn't. I suppose the best solution would be to stop bitching and create my own web site. Oh well.

Jack, I agree that it would be very nice to be able to search photographers' names (and photos, folders, presentations by using keywords). However, as I understand it, it's a problem of resources, as in computing power and programming time. As far as I know, Brian is the only person keeping this show on the road with regard to programming and system administration (although there are quite a few people contributing in other ways: moderators, elves and a few editors).

You could help as well: subscribe to photo.net to help financially, or write articles (contact me for details if interested).

They can. Simply go to http://www.photo.net/directory/, type in the user's last name, click on the correct name from the list provided and you're at that photographer's workspace.
