jeffa
I recently pulled my old FM2 with a MD12 drive out of retirement. What a great camera. Unfortunately when I attach the drive, the internal meter shuts off. Without the drive on the meter works fine. Last time I used the rig, several years ago, the meter worked fine with the drive. Any suggestions? Thanks
david_h._hartman
Try cleaning the contacts. I use Q-Tips very lightly moistened with methyl alcohol. I dont like the idea of using an eraser on gold plated contacts as I imagine the plating is very thin. Once the gold is worn down to the brass it corrodes rapidly and causes constant problems. My father gave me his MD-12 but it wasnt working. I cleaned the contact and it still didnt work so I called a friend who repairs cameras. He said, "Did you clean the contacts?" I said, "Yes but Ill do it again." The second time I really cleaned them thoroughly and its never given a problem since. My guess is there wax on the contacts. Alcohol isnt a good solvent for wax. It is for oil and sugar but on for wax. I scrubbed them carefully but thoroughly the second time. Give it a shot. I hope it works for you.
steve_levine
Try a mild abrasive on both the camera bottom contacts & the MD's.Also reach way inside the MD & clean the contacts in there too.A pencil eraser works good for this.
graham_line
Sometimes the plastic battery trays warp when they're left screwed into the motor; you might check to see if it's bowed and one set of contacts is poor. Can't figure out why that would affect your meter though; that still runs off the camera battery with the MD12.
jeffa
Thanks for all the great feedback! I've taken everyones advice but to no avail. In fact tonight the meter stopped working even without the MD-12 attached. I think my next move is to the repair shop. While it may be cheaper to find another one used, I've had this one since it was new and am probably more attached to it than I should. If anybody knows a cheap meter fix, I'm all ears. Again thanks for all the help, Jeff
