It really IS Nikon, after all . . . . .

I don't really care all that much, but had a spare 5 minutes with

the new Pop Photo. They have the results of their "9th Annual

International Picture Contest."

Of 54 winning images in all categories, thirty-one were made with

Nikon gear. Twelve were made with Canon gear. Eleven images were

made with other 35 mm gear, medium format gear, etc.

So Nikon DOES make the best pictures -- at least in this sample.

Best to all,

NikonJohn

It looked to me as if the clear winner, if one could use that term for the quality of some of the photos, is Photoshop. I imagine that sooner or later, I will be forced to those ends but in the meanwhile

it will be Nikons and film. The contest has always had some photos that have you wondering what you are missing but this years selections have raised those questions to a higher level--or maybe its just old age.

Happy Holidays

decades ago alot of pictures in Modern Photography; & Popular Photography would be captioned "Nikon F ; XXXmm lens" . This was interesting because alot more metered finders (FT FTN) were sold than plain F prisms. At that time many didnt want to admit they used a metered finder; and would submit the technical data as "Nikon F" whether it meant a meter prism or a palin prism...

Of course Canon puts in their Pop Photo ad that only a Canon lens works best on a Canon body.

Photo contests have a lot to do with the judges, a lot of luck, and some skill. The actual camera type is not going to make every shot a "winner."

I wonder what actual market share figures are between the various brands in 35mm? Anybody know? Given the popularity of Canon gear among young people, and also many pros; and given the high caliber of many of the various brands; I doubt seriously that such a high incidence of use of a particular brand as we see here is in any way meaningful - unless the meaning we are looking for is: what brand do the judges (for whatever reason) prefer? And it is Pop Photo, after all; nothing wrong with that, but their contest doesn't exactly draw entries from the world's most renowned shooters. Or even pros. I mean, it's kind of like pointing out that a contest promoted by www.photosig is dominated by Nikon; so what?

Oh nice this 'thing' again, well trust me on this, it is me making the picture, not the camera. Do you say to a carpenter 'you must have a great hammer' when he makes a fine table. Or 'you must have great pots' to a chef who earned 3 michelin starts. Or even better 'you must have a great pen' to Stephen King. Hey why stop, you could say 'you must have a great brush' to van Gogh........... Well actually you cant do the last, but you get my point dont ya?

Greetings,

I don't think anyone here really thinks the camera takes pictures...

As far as market share, I don't know the numbers but Nikon used to dominate the SLR market and there are still quite a bit of people using older Nikon. So Nikon may not be what is selling the most but still what people have the most. There used to be a poll here (nothing scientific), Nikon users outnumbered the others by a good margin.
