michael_tellings
I was contemplating to buy the Canon 4000US film scanner. I understand though that the FARE scratch/removal program doesn't work for B&W !? Is this true ? Any suggestion for an alternative scanner which has this capability ? Nicholas Barry
No scanner has this capability. FARE and ICE work by transmission of infrared light throught the semi-translucent dye clouds of color emulsions and then interpolating with the RGB channels to differentiate between dust and image data. With B&W there is no semi-transparent dye cloud, just solid silver through which the infrared light cannot pass. As a result, you can't interpolate and hence, no scratch and dust removal. NK Guy
Note that FARE and ICE work fine with chromogenic B&W film - it's traditional silver halide film (and Kodachrome) that's the problem, for the reason cited above.
robert goldstein
SilverFast 6.0 has a software method of dust and scratch removal that can work on true B&W film. There may be other software products which do the same thing.
