mickey_brandt
I have an old 80-200 AF/ED I'm shooting with N90s and thinking of buying D100Two questions :1. Will it work with D100?2. How good is the lens? I was searching for reviews on it but couldn't find any Thanks! Mickey
ilkka_nissila
It should work just fine on the D100, as do all AF and AI-P Nikkors excluding the ones made for the F3AF. The lens has an excellent reputation, the only flaw is the lack of a tripod collar, which might be an issue since shots made with the D100 require higher magnification for the same image size. The 80-200 AF Nikkors are a bit soft at the long end also, but that's only noticeable if you're used to prime lenses.
ShunCheung
Since you already have the 80-200 AF, why are you asking for other people's opinions? How do you like it yourself? I used the original version of it from 1989 to 1999 and optically it was excellent. I never own that lens and the D100 at the same time, but AF on the D100 is on the slower side while AF of that 80-200 on my F4 was very slow and had a strong tendency to over-shoot/hunt, to a point that AF was pretty much useless in that combination. I suspect that AF will be very slow if you use the old 80-200mm/f2.8 (no tripod collor) on the D100. The CAM 900 AF module on the D100 is slower and it doesn't have a very strong AF motor to drive non-AF-S lenses.
