mukund_yallambalse
Hi, I am a photographer past the begining stages with respect to photographing but very new when it comes to equipment. I have a Nikon F3 and other Nikon lenses. I am looking to buy the Nikon 300mm F4.5 ED lens. This is a used lens but the seller guarantees that it works well. I know ED lens are very much sought, however how good is this one? Also, please tell me what is a reasonable price for one which works well but shows signs of use. Thanks in advance for your help. steve_levine
The 300 f4.5 ED-IF is a great lens!Try KEH.com to check current used prices.
mskovacs
Is this the ED or the ED-IF? Yes Nikon made both in the 300/4.5. I'd go for the ED-IF version for the better handling and closer focusing.
david_s._berger
Hmmm. . .did Nikon make two ED versions, one with normal focussing and one with IF? I thought that the original lens (non ED) had normal focussing and the ED version had IF only. cheers, dsb
mskovacs
Indeed they did: http://home.aut.ac.nz/staff/rvink/nikon3.html Scroll down to the 300/4.5 section.
david_h._hartman
The 300/4.5ED (non-IF) is not a slouch in optical perform according to what Ive read. It should produce and image about as good as the ED-IF. If its like the 300/4.5 (non-AI, non-ED) that I owned it will be a little stiff in focusing but this will disappear if the focus grip is lifted a bit. If you are focusing on fast action the ED-IF version can easily be focused with a thumb or finger. The ED is said to work well with teleconverters but the ED-IF is not as good with them. If you think you will want to use a 1.4x extender the ED (non-IF) is preferred. A 1.4x extender will yield a 420/6.3 lenses. This is an option worth considering given the price of 400mm lenses. The ED-IF works well with extension tubes giving 1/2 life size with almost 1m of free working distance when extended with a PN-11 and PK-13 tube. I would expect the ED to work well with tubes also but you might need two PN-11 to achieve 1/2 life size. IF lenses loose focal length as they are focused closer. The ED-IF focuses to 2.5m. I believe the ED focuses to 3.5m. I think you would be quite pleased with this lens. Id be inclined to buy one. Im sorry I have no idea what one should cost. As stated above Ive owned the non-ED version of that lens and now own the 300/4.5 ED-IF AI version. Hope this helps,
nate_merz1
I tried out the lens you speak of in my local camera store. It was great! It really was.
