NIKON D 100

Sure, the price will drop, but if you wait for prices to stop dropping you'll never buy anything. It's up to you to decide if it's something you need now. Oh, and if it does what you want now, chances are it'll still do what you want six months from now. New cameras and lower prices won't change its performance.

"Sure, the price will drop, but if you wait for prices to stop dropping you'll never buy anything."

That's an excellent point. It's just like computers. Get what you need to do the job. There will always be something better coming out and older units selling for less. But, if you keep waiting for prices to drop on current models and waiting for the next model to come out, you will never have a computer!

If 6 megapixels will do the job then go for it!

Again, Canon is projecting that lower-end DSLRs will be below US$1000 in about 18 months. In other words, the successor to the D100 will cost half as much in 2004. Don't take those numbers literally but that is the general direction.

In other words, in less than 2 years DSLRs will be very affordable. If you buy a $1000 DSLR, the most you can lose is $1000 (assuming that you can continue to use the other accessories). I can't imagine that new DSLRs will become $100. So in a couple of years the price won't go down much more but the features will continue to improve, such as better CCD, more RAM, higher frame rate, etc.

Also, take a look at the high end DSLR's that are coming out and the constant 'out of stock' status of the mid level DSLR's like the D100 and D60. Whether Canon, Nikon, or Kodak introduce a 14 megapixel digicam soon, I don't think that will affect the price of the D100 or D60. They are aimed at 2 different markets.

There is some logic to waiting. For me, all I need is a camera that has enough resolution to make quality 16x20's. If, for example, the D100 is capable of it now and I know the price is going to drop by $500-1000 in 6 months, then it would make sense to wait. It wouldn't matter to me whether there was a D200 with 80 megapixels out. Look at all the people buying Olympus E10's new and used.

Digital Cameras follow Moors Rule more or less. That is to say,

the same computer/digital camera will be half in price every 18

months. Especially since the Digital SLRs are being put in

35mm camera bodies so the expense is in the R&D of the

electronics and very little else.

Out side of the dust getting on the CCD issue (which all digital

SLRs have) it's a great camera for most of the shooting that I do.

If it does what you want/need it to do then get it. If you can't afford

it wait. If you really don't need it then keep waiting until you need

a given feature set and that will always be cheaper the longer

you wait.

Cheers.

Just to keep our citations straight...

Moor's Rule is "When people make you jealous, suffocate them with pillows."

The thing about 18-month cycles of performance gains and price drops, that's called Moore's Law.

Tudor, digital cameras do not depreciate at quite the breakneck pace of personal computers, but they do exhibit price erosion. The price of the D100 can be expected to drop to $1,500.00 or less. It might take a year.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sureee...they'll sell it for 1450.00 - but it will probably be a Grey Market import with no warranty and probably not have (insert any of the following) battery, charger, software, box...I'd be wary of that price.

The whole Moore's bit only applies if you follow marketing hype. There are news-pros making a living using 2.7mp D1H's and at least 1 full time wildlife photog doing the same. Wait till the next major photographic equipment trade show (Feb-March I think) - we'll probably see a new Nikon Pro machine then and a *bit* of price erosion (great term!) might seep in. More than likely though - you will be able to snag a great deal on ebay as people rush to auction their new D100's off in order to buy the latest greatest.
