Dear All,

I have been using my F4s for some years now and have decided to

switch to digital, D1x. I will be picking up my camera this coming

Thursday, can someone give me some tips in what to look for before I

pay for it, since this will be my first time using a digital?

Thanks,

Cal

In addition to the basic tests to make sure that the camera works properly (auto focus, shutter, metering, LCD screen functions) make sure that you get all of the hardware and sofware that come with the camera, and also run the following tests which are only required in digital cameras:
- Check for dust contamination on the CCD. It can be cleaned, but it'd be nice if you didn't have to. Basically, shoot a white surface or clear sky at f/16 or less then look at the image at full size. Dust contamination will show up as dark spots.
- Check for hot pixels. Make a long exposure (30s-60s) with the lens cover on then look at the image at full size for bright spots. You will find some but the less the better. This gives an indication of the quality of the CCD.
- Earlier D1x had a problem where the front plastic cover doesn't stay closed. Check for it although there is little you can do about it.
Good luck!

Are you buying used or new? Is the seller an individual or a store? If a store, are they an authorized Nikon dealer?

I read on another forum that a person purchased a used D1x from a store (non-authorized dealer) and sent the camera to Nikon for a firmware/buffer upgrade. It turns out that the camera was _stolen_. Nikon seized the camera. It's now a huge mess, and the person does not have a camera. I believe that authorized Nikon dealers are under strict rules about checking serial numbers of cameras before they buy/sell them. See if you can check the serial number of the camera with Nikon before you purchase.
