"hill-and-dale focusing and aperture collars"...?

OK Guys,

sorry in advance for this question, but when someone refers to "hill-and-dale focusing and aperture collars", what do they mean?

Is this the textured surface found on many old and new casings, or the older type which effectively allows your fingers to be placed in the "dales" between the "mountains".

Boy, this was more difficult to describe than I envisaged:-)

Anyone know what on earth I'm talking about, here?

Thanks in advance, Duncan

First I've heard of that term. I'm guessing it refers to the older metal scalloped rings, like this one:
Roland Vink's excellent reference site)
