Nikon N70 Power Failure

I have had a strange thing happen to my N70! I was about halfway

through a roll of 24 exp film, when all of a sudden, the camera

failed. Specifically, I got an "ERR" alert on the display, and the

battery indicator showed no power. The odd thing is that when the

power is shut off, and then turned back on, everything shows

correctly...that is until the shutter is released. As soon as the

shutter button is released, (but apparently without the shutter

actually doing anything) the "ERR" appears and the battery shows as

exhausted. I took it to a local camera store and they said it is

probably something electrical. Anybody have a clue as to what

specifically that could be? Thanks!

Sorry to mention the obvious, but the battery could be dead. I've gotten bit by this before on my N8008. Suddenly, the display goes ERR (or something like that) when I hit the shutter button. Power cycling seems to reset the display, but it does something dumb when I hit the shutter again. It seemed that the last thing the camera was actually telling me was that it was out of battery.

Another possibility, and I have had this happen with my N70, is that my AF lens suddenly wasn't being recognized as such. It was a problem with the lens (I have since gotten rid of it). The lens was flakey, sometimes it showed ERR (in program mode on my N70), and othertimes it would work fine. I would umount, then remount the lens to get it to work. One day, all the remounting would help it and I stopped using the lens. So, try a different lens and see if the same thing happens, or try a test shot in manual mode.
