Mid-roll film change in a N90s

I want to change the roll of film (Velvia) in my N90s after a few

exposures. I plan on manually removing the film in a black bag.

Will I have problems with the N90s after doing this. Should I hit

the rewind buttons on the camera after I do it? It seems to me I've

read posts about problems with the N90s after doing this.

Any advise?

I predict you will have problems with that method. First, you will likely be 'fighting' the take up spool since the method for releasing tension is to initiate a powered rewind. Second, the N90s is very fussy about 'rewindus interruptus' (it's bit me a few times); as you say, you'd have to initiate a rewind and let it complete after you ripped the film out.

A film leader retriever is both cheaper and smaller then a black bag. I would rewind normally and then simply retrieve your leader.

Dan;

Nikon or a Nikon dealer service dept can program the camera to stop the power rewind just before the leader disappears into the cannister, so you can re-use it.

If you do this and place the leder at the same place very time, you can reuse the film and lose only one frame after you shoot off the number of rolls taken the first time. This is the best use for lens caps.

Cheers

I have made many mid-roll changes with my N90s and they all have been made by rewinding the film and then using a leader retriever to reuse the remainder of the film. I would use your suggested method only if I was looking to screw up my camera. When you replace the roll, set the ASA dial at its highest reading, hold your hand over the end of the lens which has a lens cap in place, close your viewfinder blind and push the shutter until it reads the proper number. Don't forget to reset your ASA to the proper setting.

Good luck,

Larry

I have made many mid roll changes in my N70. The camera is now dead... It worked every time except for one.. the last time I was able to use the camera. I have tried everything to make the Err message go away... no luck. Something got fried. Have Nikon reprogram your camera, or heck, how much money are you saving by doing this in the first place???

Dan, if you only want to do this once, just rewind the film normally and ask the folks at your friendly local camera shop to retrieve the leader for you (while you buy more film or something).

If you want to do it fairly often, buy a film leader retriever for just a few bucks. It takes about 15 seconds to get the "tongue" of film out, once you get the hang of the process.

If you want to do it all the time, have Nikon reprogram your N90s so it always leaves a bit of leader out when it's finished rewinding.

Keep a permanent marker (Sharpie or similar) handy so you can always mark the film cassette with the number of exposed frames.

Have fun,

This is a one time deal, I hope. A friend asked me to take pictures of thier kids for xmas cards this weekend and I'm mid-roll right now with Velvia in my N90s. I think I'll just use my F2Mn, which is also mid-roll with B&W, but its easy to do a mid-roll change. I've read most of the archives about getting the camera re-programed and maybe I'll get it done someday. I will also get one of those little gadgets for pulling out the leader for the next time I'm in this situation. But I have to take the pictures tomorrow and I'm too busy at my real job to stop at a camera store to get one of those gadgets.

Thanks for the advise and for stopping me from ruining my camera.

With my 8008s, i used to be able to get a leader-out rewind by rewinding and then opening the back of the camera when i heard the film come off the takeup spool. This worked around 75% of the time. The other 25% the leader went into the canister.
