D1H vs. D1X at 1600 ISO

Can anybody help me understand the difference in image quality for

the D1H vs. D1X, when the images are shot at 1600 ISO? I understand

that setting the D1X to 1600 ISO is more difficult than doing the

same on a D1H, but I don't know what the resultant image qualities

would be.

I understand the difference between the two cameras is speed and file

size, and I understand the 5 fps for 40 frames vs. the 3 fps for 9

frames. Can you tell me what to expect after the 9th such frame on

the D1X? A 1 secong lag? Longer?

A d1x has pixels half the size of those in a D1h so its sensitivity is halved. Its slowest speed and its highest speed are 1/2 a d1h but image quality is much better.

The ISO dial on a h goes to 1600, where on a x it goes to 800. To set higher speed you have a custom function accessed through the menu on the back. You can select +1 or +2 stops. On an h that is 3200 or 6400. On an x its 1600 or 3200.

In my opinion, 1600 is fine on both. I have many published 1600 images from my d1x. The h is a bit better but its image quality is markedly less at lower iso so on balance I use the x.

As to the 9th frame question - you have to wait for the camera to write the frames to the card, however long that takes. Card speeds vary so there is no exact answer but it is 1-2 seconds as a rule till the next shot.

However, Nikon now has a modification that doubles this buffer size for a small charge.

Also, unless you shoot the 9 frames all at once you don't usually hit the limit because the camera is always writing to the car to clear the buffer.
