Nikon D100

This is info I never seen before in photo.net:

http://www.popularphotography.com/Camera/ArticleDisplay.asp?

ArticleID=231

(contains some info about D100 and Canon D60).

"At lower light levels, the D100 outperforms the D60..." and "The EOS

D60 features a second-generation CMOS (complementary metal-oxide

semiconductor)sensor, while the Nikon D100 sports a new CCD (charged

capacitance device) sensor. We could write an entire article on the

individual merits and failings of these imaging sensors. We believe

CCD technology is still ahead of CMOS when it comes to delivering

superior image quality across a broad range of lighting condition..."

Are folks at Popular Photography unbiased?

Apparently Pop do seem to like the D100 more than D60, and the CCD more than the CMOS. Although of course they can't bring themselves to actually say that they didn't really like the D60 and CMOS because those are Canon products and Canon, being a "innovative elite", has a impressive propaganda budget which which pop photo would dearly like to have a slice of. Hence the biase.

Pop Photo and just about any other US photo magazine cannot afford to offend any one of those advertisers. That is why they like every product they review. In their current issue, they seem to prefer the Fuji S2 over the Nikon D100.

I have little doubt that the Canon D60, Fuji S2 and Nikon D100 are all fine "budget" DSLRs. (I know, it is hard to consider a $2000 camera to be in the cheaper category.) They can get the job done but there are some limitations compared to those DSLRs that cost $5000. For example, I think AF is on the slower side on my D100 (better w/ AF-S lenses) and I read a lot of complaints about the D60's AF speed in the EOS Forum. IMO people are better off spending their time taking pictures than worrying about any minute differences other than the EOS vs. F mount among those three.

According to a news item I heard on the radio, Canon expects the "budget" DSLRs to drop to around US$1000 in 18 months. That means the successor to these models will really be affordable.

Why is it, whenever Pop Photo is mentioned, this crap starts? Why can't anyone deal directly with the matter at hand? There are umpteen gazillion Canon DSLR users, and with the D100, Nikon DSLR users are fast catching up. Can't anyone just have an opinion? Here, I'll make it easier for you: which is better, and WHY--Canon's CMOS or Nikon's CCD? In your eagerness to FORCE the issue that Pop Photo is sold out, you (collective you) are starting to sound a little ridiculous. Basically, you have concluded that they have sold out to the highest bidder, who is Nikon in this case. Since you follow the magazine and its advertisers so closely, whi is their "favorite" lens manufacturer, flash manufacturer, etc.? Tran, it looks like YOU are the biased one. You seem so convinced that the Canon CMOS is superior (do you even have a Canon DSLR? I'll bet you think Canon film gear is tops, too.) that you think Pop Photo has sold out, because their opinion happens to be different. Have you personally tested and compared the D1, D1H, D1X, Fuji S1, Fuji S2, Canon D30, D60, 1D, and Kodak's models, as well? I didn't think so. It doesn't matter what Pop Photo says, anyway (or the ads) because nearly everyone who buys a new DSLR will already have an investment in lenses. The one clear advantage to the Nikon system is not the Nikon CCD itself, but the choice among different manufacturers using the Nikon mount. Actually, it seems Pop likes the Fuji S2 better than the Nikon D100. Now how does THAT fit into your conspiracy theory?

Putting aside for the moment questions of whether Pop photo is under the control of the Illuminati, there are useful and detailed reviews of the D100, including some comparative analysis,

by Phil Askey at digital photography review:

and by Thom Hogan on his web page:
