warrenlewis
Any experience with the AS-17? I'd like to use it, primarily, for macro work. I would mount the SB-28 flash on a strobframe macro bracket, or, for about the same dollar, am I better off with a Phoenix ring light? Thanks, Warren
rich_frank
The AS-17 adaptor works well on the F3. You adjust the film ISO and exposure compensation on the AS-17. Max. film speed is 400. The F3 ttl seems to be a basic ttl as compared to the later model bodies, but it does the basics well. The synch. speed is 1/80 (I think) so fill flash capabilities of the F3 are somewhat limited. A ringlight works nicely on the F3 (I use mine several times a week). I've never used a flash bracket with my F3, you'll need to buy the off camera cord (SC 17 ?) if you go with the stroboframe. While the F3 is a very fine camera, it has some flash drawbacks, primarily the slow synch speed and the need for an expensive flash adaptor. If your macro includes doing butterflies, or using 200 mm macro lenses, or other moving creatures I would suggest a camera with a 1/250 flash synch. In summary the SB-28 is a great flash, I don't know anything about the Phoenix ringlight but the Nikon SB-29 ringlight is a good one (although I'm waiting for mine to be returned from Nikon as I just had to have it rebuilt) and the F3 has basic flash capabilites up to shutterspeed of 1/80 with the purchase of the adaptor. There has been alot written about the use of ringlights in the archives - some of the more interesting trends are to use the ringlight for some fashion shots and some portraits that give an incredible amount of detail. Wow - what a ramble - have fun.
