SB 80X versus Metz power

I have been using Metz 45 CT 4 with my Nikon F3 for a while.

Recently I purchased Nikon F100 and am wondering weather I'd

be better of using Nikon SB 80X flash with Nikon F100?

The features of the Nikon SB 80X seem to be exciting, but what

worry me is the output power.

Is Nikon SB 80X a match or close to Metz 45 CT 4 as far as

power is concerned?

Your help will be greatly appreciated

I am not familiar with the Metz flash system. However, I do use the F100 & SB-80DX combo. What I can tell you is that I did this because I often use the flash as a fill flash. It is in these situations where it is especially important for the camera and flash to be able to communicate properly. When I company like Metz puts out a flash. I dont think Nikon reveals to them the method in which the camera's electronics works. Thus, they may not be able to do as good a job as Nikon.

Most certainly the Nikon SB-80DX is going to work better for you on your F100 since it is a dedicated flash. It's going to do balanced fill flash, something that the Metz can't and something you can't really do without. As to the power output, the SB-80DX is the most powerful Nikon flash yet with a GN of 38/125 (m/ft)@. ISO 100. I believe your Metz 45 is GN 45(m)so it's a little less but I think the added benefits more than make up for this.

The SB80DX is close. Probably close enough.

One feature I liked a lot about my Metz 45 series flash was the second flash tube, for a bit of direct flash while bouncing the main light.

One feature of the Metz I never got to like was the diagonal placement of shadows, since the handlemount creates an up-and-to-the-side relationship between flash head and lens axis.

The SB80DX will sit over the lens centerline and can ride a bracket to sit WAY up over the lens centerline.

Those physical features are of more significance to me than the fraction of an f/stop additional power in the Metz. So the Metz snoozes in my closet and the Speedlight is in the case with the cameras.

Just my 2 cents' worth, which, after adjusting for inflation, may have still less value for anyone else.
