jim_krager
Why do most of the bad comments and low ratings come from users that don't have any photographs posted. It would be helpful to see what they think are good photographs or are they just doing this to make peoples averages low? I like criticisms that are helpful but if all they are doing are making fun of your work I would rather not receive any comments. I suggest that you only let users make comments or rate photos if they have some of their own posted.
craig
Jim - Your argument is just a bit assenine. Should all movie reviewers be required to make movies before they can offer their critiques? If people put their photos up for criticism, they are doing so VOLUNTARILY and must take the good with the bad. Everyone's going to have their own opinion and if you don't agree, then tough, don't post. I agree insofar that people shouldn't "make fun" of your work. But from what I've seen, critiques like those are generally rare. Maybe you can offer some examples to back up your claim? I stopped posting my photos a long time ago when someone took a few of my photos off this website and posted them on a commercial website for a local tour company. That really pissed me off and I haven't bothered posting here again. However, I don't think that experience should prevent me from enjoying every aspect of this website, INCLUDING the critique forums. Anyway, I see this argument pop up from time to time, and its usually from people who are new to photo.net and don't yet understand its unique openness. Photo.net has gotten along just fine until now and I'm sure it will continue to do so for a long time to come.
jim_krager
Movie Critics at least give you a reason why they think your movie is crap. It would be nice to get constructive criticism that can help a beginner to learn how to create better photographs
root
In my experience, people without images posted - for whatever reason - are more likely to use inflamatory language like 'assenine". Many of the '0' photo types have just signed on and discover this wonderful little interactive game called 'critique this photo'. Happens all the time. The bigger problem, as I see it, are people who give a 6/6 to an image where everyone else has it at 8/8. You look at their posted images and see a very unsophisticated approach to photography. Rating a pyrotechnic blockbuster movie is not the same as appreciating a somewhat more subtle film. This site is more like a seminar on filmmaking, isn't it? nelson cotrim
Jim, I haven´t posted any pitcures (yet) because I have them all packed up (I moved recently) and have to file them properly, and because I don´t have a scanner. I´d very much like to upload some of them as soon as possible, but that is still some time from now. It should not stop me commenting or rating (I only rate a few photos, mainly the ones I like - that´s why my average is so high), specialy since I like to give ideas, and never rate without commenting on why I like or dislike something. I feel fine when someone likes my comments and agree with them. I´m starting to do it now, and still have to do that on my own pictures, but I´ve learned a lot already by commenting on other peoples photos and watching their reactions. When I do post some of my photos, I would like people to do the same. I will not want people rating either 5/5 or 10/10 without commenting on why they did it. Actually, I think the most important part of it is the comment itself. Why want to prevent a comment when they tell you what they think is good or not? That´s even better than watching their photos. Posting good or bad photos doesn´t mean I´m a good or bad judge, just that my photos are good or bad.
