In the topical forums - not one of them relates to digital

photography as far as I can tell.

There ar two Canon forums and not one Nikon forum.

There is a Brownie forum, but what about all the other great vintage

cameras? How about a vintage camera forum instead of just a Brownie

forum?

These forums were migrated from another www.greenspun.com which was winding down its operations. It is a bit a matter of chance which forums succeeded there. However, we are considering creating several new forums and if you have any suggestions they would be welcome.

However, the suggestions shouldn't just be based on "logic". For example, we probably won't create a Nikon forum just to give Nikon equal time with the Canon forums that we already have. Why not? Because there are already several active Nikon forums and lists on the net, and we are not certain there would be much demand for a new one here.

Or a vintage camera forum might be logical, considering that we already have a Brownie forum, but we would need someone to moderate it and some reason to believe that people would want it.

How about:

Generic camera troubleshooting/repair forum?

Pet photography forum similar to people photography?

Digital manipulation techniques/questions(aka photoshop)?

Digital scanning and printing?

Personally, I think just because there other (excellent or not) resources on the web should not influence whether a forum should or should not be started on photo.net.

I'm on the asiatlr mail list, the nikonrepair maillist and the mamiya mail list. I really like one-stop shopping. If photo.net can handle the traffic, I'd rather see it here. I think the design of photo.net is the best out there. I like the real time posts and the ability to attach photos to questions for illustration purposes. I've already voted for photo.net with my wallet.

FWIW,

Mark

Definitely a digital forum. <p>

I know that these other forums have been migrated here but now there is a great deal of redundancy. I assume that these migrated forums are also archived. How about eliminating some of them after they have had some time to integrate with the rest of PN? Do we really need Canon forums when the questions could be asked elsewhere? There are so many forums now that people have trouble figuring out where to ask a question. Help & Feedback in particular comes to mind. I assume it's for PN related issues but there are people posting other questions there. <p>

I think we need fewer, more well defined forums with their purpose spelled out if it isn't clear.

To those who want a digital forum. How many of the questions pertaining to that subject do you think are equipment-related? My perception, for right now, is most of them. So what's wrong with using the Camera Equipment forum?

BTW, I'd say the same thing for film people too.

Except for the fact that most of the crap that is appearing around here any more doesn't need to stay archived. If I were a new visitor here, my assumption would be that most of the people here think that the equipment is what photography is all about.

Hate to say it, but I have a funny feeling the moderators are gonna get slammed sooner or later with more work. Hopefully that'll be a good thing.

What if we had a pilot program to ban ALL equipment questions? Just for thirty days or so. Any subject would be fair game unless you wanted to know which $250 digital P&S to buy (for example<g>). What do yu think that would do to the user dynamic around here? Maybe make people THINK before they post? Maybe get back to the concept of analyzing a photographic objective? Hmmm . . . . .

I don't shoot digital and don't plan to any time soon, so having to sort through a bunch of digital threads in one big "equipment" forum would waste a lot of time.

Equipment does not make the image, the photographer does. A camera is just a hammer, what you build is up to you, yada yada yada. Face it, photographer love equipment and we love talking about it. That's just the way it is.

Yes there are other Nikon forums on the net but what does that have to do with photo.net having two Canon forums and no Nikon forums? There are other Canon forums too. Some of the Nikon forums are so cluttered that I don't even visit them, so that has nothing to do with photo.net not having one. Have one!
