art waldschmidt
Tony, I also think the move has been beneficial. There had been just too many nasty posts at Greenspun, and I feared it would eventually cost the forum some of its best contributors. Frank made a good point about the potential of the net/this forum to bring individuals together (from widely divergent backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles, etc.) who otherwise might never have the opportunity to share in the same areas of interest - the world is certainly bettered by this sort of communication! All the best!, Art
msitaraman
I do have a small nitpick. As with other photo.net Q&A, the "Recent Answers" option in the forum resets the cutoff date and time somewhat unpredictably and arbitrarily. Sometimes days pass, and you can see the threads in the order answered going back several days, but at other times, the clock resets suddenly, and there are but a few threads under "Recent Answers". I bookmark "Recent Answers" to read the latest threads, and sometimes when the clock has reset, its not a long enough list of threads.
joshroot
By all accounts, every LUSENET forum member has known about the impending move for MONTHS. The LF forum just talked it to death and end did nothing at all (or not enough anyway). I'm happy here. But I've been using photo.net for at least as long as I have the Leica forum, probably longer. andy_wagner2
Tony Love it here. Only two drawbacks-I also miss the time stamp, and the big one that you can't control is Photo.net is blocked at work. I guess they want us to be productive or somting;>( sadists!!! Oh well great work and thank you
tim_gee
Another Yes vote. And a clipped wing or two as a bonus. Many thanks.
poetprince
discovering this place could not have happened at a greater time for me. intelligence abounds and courtesy seems to be the common bond. people like to interact here. and i love to interact with them. i'm in the process of selling off all of my personal possessions, strapping my leica over my shoulder, and heading out into the world with my artistic visions and notions. it feels good knowing that i will always have a 'home' i can come and visit. i swear, i could write a book on Leica Users.<br> <br> on a technical note....i too have a mac...a toddler really..(2yr. old iMac) and i notice at certain times when i attempt to respond or add a comment to a photo critique that the cursor doesn't show itself in the box provided, nor can i see any of the words unless i click my mouse outside of the box provided. at that point, the words will appear, but still no cursor (tab, indicator) which means if i discover a spelling mistake it is almost incorrectable insomuch as i have to delete every letter to get to the one that i want to remove. also..if i type under the 'plain text' heading, no matter how i structure my paragraphs, the finished text comes out in one long line. even in HTML i have to type in an actual 'page break' code.<br> all in all though..a fabulous site that is helping me learn new things and discover new ways of seeing in a most joyous way.<br> <br> ~poetprince
joe_buechler
Tony, the biggest bummer for me is that I can no longer access the forum during lunch hour at my place of business, which was typically when I was the most active. Many large company's network administrators ban Photo.net for various reasons. I won't be contributing here very much any more, because I can't. I've also been a longtime reader and occasional contributor to the LF forum, since I also use a view camera. The site owner and majority of members have been opposed to moving to photo.net since being approached about the subject nearly two years ago. I like that group of people very much, and I find it distressing that members here are hurling insults at them over an issue that doesn't even affect the Leica group. That's the kind of behavior that I've come to expect from photo.net people, but not from the Leica forum. I'll follow the LF group wherever they end up, but if they stay on photo.net, I'll have the same problem accessing the forum as I do here. Based on his work and the discussions I've had with him in the chat room, I've always liked and respected Philip Greenspun. However, I have enough issues with Photo.net that I haven't participated in several years, and had to request my old password which I had forgotten. It isn't necessarily true that those same issues will come to affect the Leica forum, but it concerns me. Joe
mike dixon
I liked the pre-troll days at LUSENET better than I like it here at photo.net, but considering the recent history of the board, I think this is currently a good home for the board. My gripes here are that I often have to log in several times before it "takes," and the server can get get rather slow. On the plus side, it's nice to be able to preview messages before posting. hoyin_lee1
Tony, the new forum works fine for me--no complaints whatsoever. Being able to preview my posts and correct any typo is especially nice. Thank you so much!
albert knapp md
Dear Tse-Sung and Olivier:Thank you so much for the advice. My site now works perfectly!!
Rob F.
The new home is working fine for me. Right now I'm having trouble getting the bugs out of my new SWB DSL, which, although it incorporates Prodigy, doesn't seem to want to recognize my old Prodigy email address. So, this is a sort of experiment to see whether PhotoNet will recognize me.
wind.dk
I think this new home is fine - the move coincides nicely with me beginning to use Leicas, and I probably wouldn't have found this forum at it's old home. Oh sure, I was or would have become aware of it at some point, but I doubt I would have started using more than one site. From this you can probably guess, that I'm a photo.net user and new to the Leica forum, and it makes a great addition to my unified view. This question caused me to check the discussion on the LF forum. It was quite bizarre. I won't go into details, as my purpose isn't to ridicule (a few of the) LF people, I'll just say, that the photo.net forums have always struck me as well implemented, and the Leica forum content is very interesting for me. randy_samos
Tony - Nice of you to ask. Personaly, I've found the transistion to be seamless - almost transparent. I'd say for me the biggest difference is that there are almost no troll posts. I've found the change quite positive actually. Brian (you?) had my password all ready for me when I got here, and it's been fine. I find I spend a bit more time crusing the other forums now than I used to. I *like* it here. I love having the archives indexed and searchable. /r
ray_moth
May I add my thanks to those who made this happen. I was already a member of photo.net and found no problems accessing this forum. On the whole, I think it's an improvement and we seem to have shed some unwanted baggage in the process (one particular nuisance already referred to by others). My only problem with photo.net is occasional lack of speed: sometimes a thread or an answer doesn't fully load on my screen and I have to refresh or try again. In posting answers, I have sometimes been forced to make multiple attempts before finally succeeding.
ken_prager
Tony: I've been frequenting Photo.net for even longer than the Lusenet site. So, for me it's been a seamless transition. Thanks for all your efforts both at Lusenet and here at Photo.net!
xav
For me, it's definitely better here. The only minor complaint is we don't see the date at which a thread was created anymore. All the rest is on the plus side.
oliver_s.
Thanks for asking, Tony. I prefer the current location, and be it only because it makes access a little harder for PK types. Thanks for leading us here, Tony and Brian!
Alex_Es
Hi Tony, I think it is fine. I like the preview also. The nice thing is that it is a lot like the old forum. It is quieter somehow. Good work. Best, Alex
kevincable
I agree with the desire to have the posting dates put back onto the message list - it makes it easier, at a glance, to locate the new postings. Regards, KC
patricks
I missed that some frequent posters didn't make it over, but "the core" did and I think we actually expanded our community size. getting a new "family" takes some getting use to (new rules, personalities etc.) but technically I'm much happier over here (no downtime, search funtions, confirmation of postings, no postings from you know who) I think the move was 100% successful and that this will grow into the most informative Leica user group out there. cheers,
john_fleetwood
This is a nice set up. Thanks, Tony. I kind of miss the trolls, too, but I don't miss the e-threats I was getting. Regards, John
joel_matherson
I dont know if its my imagination but alot of the posters from the old site have not joined photo net. There seems no longer the quantity or the diversity of posts that there was before. I prefer the old site sorry but was happy to move if that was in the groups best interest. As long as we dont have to "do things the photo net way" just to conform. The FS staying here like the old days is best i think.
david_carson
Love it, Tony. I've been a long-time photo.net user, and it's nice to ax the trolls. BTW, you might want to pass it up the line that the pull down menus really are bad (I'm on a fast mac, and in IE 5, they take 10 sec. to load.) I always turn them off, which is ok until I delete my cookies.... Cheers,
