Elan IIE - Fill flash ratio reduction

I am aware that when using fill flash, the Elan II will automatically reduce the fill ratio by as much as 1.5 stops [2.0 stops according to Canon] when the ambient exposure is in excess of EV 10. Does fill reduction still occur when the exposure mode is set to Manual?

<p>

There are times I wish I had CF16 like the EOS A2.

I have read that the Elan II flash exposure compensation is

added to the "automatic" reduction. So you could set the

flash exposure compensation to +1.5 stops and you would be

back at zero... it takes a lot of button pushing and fumbling,

and is prone to errors since there is no easy way to know

when the automatic compensation is in effect.

For those of you who are interested, Canon USA has confirmed Bob

Atkins answer on this matter. Even on Manual exposure, the fill flash

reduction will occur, and the amount of reduction would be based upon

the ambient light level seen by the camera at the time of exposure,

not the EV level represented by the user's manual exposure setting.
