Linhof 617s III vs. / or Fuji 617?

Hi all,

Quick few questions regarding these two cameras...

- What Fuji 6x17 format model camera is on par with the Linhof 617s III?

- Do the lenses that fit the Fuji models have the same vertical line corrective glass/no barrel distortion from the lenses

as the Linhof lenses have?

- Why do a panoramic photographer choose to use either one? Pros and cons...?

Any help and advice any experienced users could shed some light on would be good!

Cheers!

I've handled a few of the Linhof Technoramas of various generations, and I will say without fear of contradiction, that nothing can touch them in terms of engineering and build quality. Now with the Shift Adapter for the 617 s III, were my work to require that format, investment in the Technorama, purchase or lease, would be a done deal, no discussion required.
As for the lenses, Fuji as well, they are all large format optics, therefor mostly symetrical in design and rectilinear. Any minute distortion will be way out at the extremities of the image circles. The 6x17 format is a slice through the middle, thus nowhere near the edges.
One or the other? Professionals will go for state of the art, and amateurs will lean to the budget, hang around for a used whatever, and just as likely settle for a Chinese knock up.

I think my friend means "... knock off"
>> The Free Dictionary
6. Informal To copy or imitate, especially without permission: knocking off someone else's ideas.

However, the Chinese DaYi does look pretty good, and one should also consider the Fotoman.
Back to Germany, the birthplace of so many of these ideas, no 6x17 catalogue is complete without the Dr Gilde 66-17 MST Super 3D

00Zhef-422173584.jpg.6800d0bd9c666ba12069c0225eb7ff89.jpg

What about a Horseman 617 Professional?
http://www.komamura.co.jp/e/SW617.html
Great cameras, with interchangeable roll film backs for formats from 6x9 to 6x17 and a ground glass for precise focussing.
Neither Linhof nor Fotoman nor Fuji offer these features.

but it won't get you anywhere.

Jens,
I am afraid you do not know much about the Linhof 617 SIII. First there are the lenses; 72mm, 90mm, 110mm, 180mm and 250mm. The 72mm, 90mm and 110mm are avialable in either shift or non-shift versions. The shfit versions fit the 617 SIII Shift adapter.
Each of the above lenses and the shift adapter have a tripod socket to mount them directly to the tripod head. The 617 SIII camera body does not have a tripod socket.
To the back of the non-shift lenses or to the back of the shift adapter you mount either the camera body or THE GROUNDGLASS BACK 001640.
If you have mounted the GROUNDGLASS BACK then to that you can mount the MAGNIFIER ADAPTER 022621 to the GROUNDGLASS BACK. Then you can attach the sliding 3x GROUNDGLASS LOUPE 022612 to the MAGNIFIER ADAPTER for hands free use of the loupe.
There are also LENS PROTECTING RINGS available from Linhof for the larger lenses.
So your conclusion is competely incorrect regarding the Linhof 617 S III camera system. As the 617 S III is a current camera is evolving continuously over its life. An example of this is the addition of a darkslide to the 617 SIII body, starting about 3 years ago, to allow mid roll film change as well as the possibility to groundglass focus and compose before every shot, if desired, without fogging any film. In other words the Linhof 617 SIII body handles just like a roll film back.

Resurrecting an old thread !! I'm particularly looking for this feature in Linhof. I see that many Linhof S III versions are available in the used market. How do we know which S III version has the Dark slide option? Thanks
