Attaching a gel filter to the barn doors of Lowel Tota — will the filter melt?

Recommended Posts

I need to use Lowel Tota with an umbrella and a blue filter gel.

If I attach the umbrella, then I can't attach the gel frame.

So, I want to attach the filter to the barn doors with clothespins.

Lowel Tota uses 750W halogen tungsten bulbs that get very hot.

Will the filter melt?

I am looking at these two brands:

Lee Filters Full C.T. Blue Lighting Filter

and

Rosco Full Blue CTB

I don't have the equipment on hands yet so I can't just try it.

Thank you.

I can't tell you about the color filters you mention, but I burned a hole in my polarizing gels with Lowel TotaLights with their gel holders. I had some longer ones made by a machine shop ( about 10 inches longer than the factory ones) and the new gels were fine after that. I have seen other color gels get discolored after some use with White Lightning strobes equipped with 250 watt modeling lights when used in a filter slot on an enclosed reflector. If I were you, I would get larger sheets of gel and not attach them directly to the barn doors of the TotaLight, but use something like Manfrotto extension arms to hold the gel a little farther from the light to reduce the heat.

'Gel' filters are available in heatproof grades. You need to specify that when ordering. Lee filters supply the theatre trade, where the filters are (or were) regulargly stuck in front of 500 watt floods or 1Kw spots and for hours on end. That's the grade you want.

Incidentally, and FWIW, electronic flash isn't entirely devoid of heat problems either. I recently evaporated the paint off the face of a wristwatch by accidentally firing a speedlight into it at full power from a distance of a couple of inches. Luckily it was a cheap watch! Have also bubbled cheap coloured gels by taping them over the Fresnel of a speedlight too.
