Regarding "Moderator . . ."

Recommended Posts

Can someone please explain why the 05/10/2022 thread on the "Photo.Net Site Help" was taken down? I do confess that I posted on the thread at issue an observation that questioned Tommy Filmist's objectivity. Specifically, I referred to my doing post work rather often. His response was a rather strong ad hominem (argument against the person) that most likely was directed primarily at me (and perhaps a slight degree less against Papa Tango).

I did raise the question about qualifying as a moderator, having been surprised to see this member so described. Recently a different member made some extremely unpleasant comments about a picture I had posted. I decided to reply politely with more information about the picture, but it fell on deaf ears. I feel that the best way to deal with bullies is to simply ignore them. They like nothing more than to provoke reaction from their victims.

I am not on all the time, but frequently. Please feel free to PM me any time with issues or behaviors that you find disturbing.

Sandy, this is no BS. You do a great job as a Mod. Aside from being quite helpful, you don't play favorites; you tell it like it is.

John, the member who made "... some extremely unpleasant comments . . ." is a Moderator! I was his target.

Michael, I thought I made this clear in that thread you reference, but perhaps not. Tommy is not and never was a moderator. It was a glitch of the system that labeled him thus. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Suddenly I had “moderator” under my avatar in all threads, and I contacted a real moderator who was able to fix it and get the label of moderator off my profile.

I suspect the reason the thread was taken down may have to do with the PN guideline that moderation is not supposed to be a matter of public discussion. If there is a moderation or bullying situation, it used to be there were several moderators one could contact—privately—and the situation was usually readily dealt with if the moderator saw fit to take action or get involved.

These days, with only one active moderator who, of course, can’t be everywhere all at once or logged in all the time, it seems like John’s conclusion is wise and workable. Ignore those who bully or otherwise misbehave beyond reasonable expectations of a diverse public group until they can be dealt with by a site moderator or administrator. Feeding trolls only gives them more life.

I'm uncertain whether being a moderator here is a secret and I'm certain it's a lousy volunteer job. But who are the moderators here? There's Sandy of course, and W. Micheals [sp?], but is a current list possible to share?

I see that 'Moderator' appears where I have 'Yorkshire, mostly on film', and Tony Parsons has 'Norfolk and Good' (which I failed to get for ages, incidentally). These used to be editable in your Account, as a thing called 'Custom Title', which is no longer accessible to edit. If it were, I might change mine, since I don't do much with film now, sadly. Anyhow, I only wonder if the guy in question has found a way to hack that entry and gave himself the subtitle of 'Moderator', whether or not he has any powers. Edited by Dustin McAmera

Have no idea what happened or how, but the individual is no longer a problem. I haven't time to read everything, call my attention to problems and I can only promise to do my best with a cure.

Sam, the individual who apparently never was a Mod certainly had some rather nasty things to say about me. Perhaps what I said that prompted a flood of nastiness struck a nerve.
