Nikon Officially Announce the Z-Mount 800mm/f6.3 PF Lens

FWIW, the 800mm PF Nikon uses in their announcement has serial number 20002001.

As far as I know, all Nikon Z-mount lenses have 8-digit serial numbers, and they always start with a 2. In fact, since no lens model has reached a million units yet, their serial numbers all start with 20. One semi exception is the original FTZ adapter, which is not exactly a lens. The early ones made in Japan have 8-digit serial numbers starting with a 2, but production shifted to Thailand and those serial numbers start with a 3. The FTZ ii are now manufactured in China and their serial numbers are starting with a 2 again.

or maybe ****2022, like the year??

That is an interesting suggestion. Back in the very early days (pre 1960s) many of their lenses has serial numbers based on the date. Many of the early F-mount lenses had serial numbers based on physical characteristics such as the focal length, max aperture, or in the case of one fisheye the diameter of the image circle. But since the mid 1980s the start serial numbers have always been based on a round number, usually starting at 200001 (with variations on the number of zeros) with subsequent series starting at the next significant number.

Nikon uses the date, including the year in digits, as part of their battery serial numbers. But if they use that for the lens serial numbers, they may need to add some digits to the serial as it would roll over after 9999 within a year. Perhaps not an issue for the 800mm PF, but for some popular consumer lenses, such as the 24-70mm/f4 S, Nikon definitely produces more than 10K a year.
