nigel_farmer
I have have just acquired a Epson 1290 from my father in law who bought a new printer a while back. The 1290 has not been in use for a while. I'm running Windows vista and have installed the 1290(M) driver. The first few test prints produced a lot of horizontal pink lines. I performed Head Cleaning several times which did not seem to help and then ran through the head alignment process which did seem to help and I successfully managed to print a few pages of text and photos with no pink lines, and I was generally happy with the print quality.
Returning two days later, the pink horizontal lines have reappeared. I performed head cleaning twice which didn't help, then printed out a four page document (with some graphics) - the pink lines dissapeared by page 4 and then printing the document again was Ok ie no pink lines on any pages. A subsequent photo printed on 5 x 7 Epson Premium Glossy Photo (i'm not going to test on A4 or A3 ) has also come out fine.
Having googled these pink lines, I have come across a couple of pages (http://goo.gl/VZE8D & http://goo.gl/wZfAs) which seem to indicate that it is a problem with the print head and that replacing the print head or more economically getting a new printer is the only option.
Has anyone else experienced this or can comment on what causes the pink lines and how to resolve? Any input is much appreciated.
brad_smith8
I had this problem with an older Epson. I gave up on it after wasting lots of ink and paper.
peterbcarter
I would try the windex treatment before giving up. You have nothing to loose.

Good reads are
http://ezinearticles.com/?Unclogging-Epson-Print-Heads&id=22858
http://www.piezography.com/support/printhead_cleaning_tips.htm
daverhaas
Sounds like a clogged or defective head. Sometimes the heads become so clogged that a normal cleaning (or 5 - 6) can't clear them out.

Replacing the head / printer are probably going to be close in cost.

Dave
sorin
This is the reason I will never buy an Epson printer ever again. Unless they make them with user replaceable heads (like Canon). I had this problem with 2 printers (1270, 1280) and I could find no fix.
nigel_farmer
The pink lines are back again. Very annoying. Have only spent money on paper and not inks. I might try the cleaning tips suggested in the links provided by Peter, but it looks like I might have to buy a new printer. I probably would have looked at the Epson SP 1400 but this experience and the comments above from others are making me lean towards the Canon Pro9000 MKII.
peterbcarter
Don't be so quick to judge the Epsons so harshly. I have a 1400 ( 3 years old) that has yet to give me problems. I originally got it to do monochrome inks, but am now using it with InkjetFly pigments. Wonderful colour and economics.
nigel_farmer
Having read some posts here and googled elsewhere, I tried cleaning using a kit (cleaning solution, syringe, tube, gloves) from an ebay store, and touch wood this seems to have resolved the problem - well I have managed to print a few good prints on two consecutive days, with no pink lines. I have however also had a problem with the waste pad being full, so have had to fool it (procedure found at http://www.2manuals.com/reset_wip.php), and have now run out of colour ink, but so far so good.
Any tips re the waste pad, without having to dismantle the printer?
developer
I used to have similar problem with my Epson printer and fixed it by running the WIC resetter by 2manuals.com. I never found what caused the problem but at least I have fixed it using this tool. There are plenty of other reset tools but not sure how many of them are working.
