End of an Era

We all knew it was coming. The only question was how fast it would happen.

I'm old enough that I am not planning to change my more-than-adequate present EOS setup.

However, my Uncle Gust kept his Model A Ford until a semi drove over him (he walked away from the accident and lived to be 106). If I knew I was going to last that long, I might change my mind.

I'm currently straddling both worlds. I have a Canon T5i with 3 lenses; 10-22mm, 17-50mm and 55-250mm an excellent lightweight kit. I've been using a little Sony a6000 with three Sony E lenses for a while. I traded my Canon D6 for an RP mirrorless and an adapter for my extensive batch of EOS EF lenses and added an EOS R 50mm 1.8. I may slowly trade up for EOS R lenses but there is no hurry. Here's a picture I made the other day on a hike around my local Civic Center Lake with a lightweight T5i ' Canon 55-250mm lens.

The relatively new Canon 90D is still a great DSLR for the price if anyone is interested. Canon didn't mince on the features like they regularly do on non-flagship cameras. For the price ($1200) you can't beat it ! Maybe 1D's and 5D's will start showing up more often on the used market, but I seriously doubt it. Most people will keep those cameras as backups when they move up to mirror less. Or use the mirror less camera as a backup ! At my age, unless I win the Lotto, I don't see myself moving up to wire less anytime soon...

Luckily, the transition is pretty easy since EF lenses work really well on RF bodies. In some cases, since no MFA is required, they actually work better. And the AF systems in the R5 and R6 are better than nearly any DSLR. RF is the future, EF is in "sunset" mode.

Yup, the end is nigh. Still, my 5D IV and EF lenses work exactly as well as they did when I bought them, which is to say, very well. Better than the person behind the viewfinder. If a truck runs over my equipment or someone steals it, I'll buy mirrorless, but for the time being, I can't see enough reason to switch (despite the wonderful AF on the R5, which I would love to have).

For that reason, I actually snapped up an EF 70-200 f/4 IS L II when Canon announced they were discontinuing it. I can always add an adapter if someone does run over my 5D.
